Mounting frustrations over inconsistent play and a season-ending injury have the Eagles weighing a post-2026 split with their Super Bowl-winning passer as roster uncertainty looms.

agles: Jalen Hurts' Future in Philadelphia Questioned More Videos

On April 1, a deep dive into Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles was published by ESPN, with the main takeaway being that sources with the team were frustrated with the quarterback's play and decision-making during the 2025 season.

The Eagles appeared to be sending Hurts a message: that he needed to play better this season, or the team could move on during the 2027 offseason.

Months later, there are more questions than answers about Hurts' future with the Eagles. Hurts is expected to be out for the remainder of the season due to health reasons.

Hurts' play during the first five games of the season wasn't great. He completed just 57.8% of his passes for 933 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions while adding 1-7 yards and one score on the ground. Following the Eagles' 19–17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Eagles had a 2–3 record.

The Eagles, sitting at 2–4 in Week 7, are not completely out of the playoff picture thanks to the NFC East being bad to start the season. Still, Philadelphia could wind up being sellers at the trade deadline if the team doesn't win a couple of games by Nov. 10. If the Eagles wind up performing a mini-rebuild this year, it's worth wondering how Hurts fits into those plans.

ESPN's Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler noted that Hurts' situation with the Eagles is one of the more curious in the NFL for a quarterback before the 2027 offseason. Philadelphia only has $22 million of Hurts' contract guaranteed for 2027 and beyond. Given the way the season started, it doesn't seem like the Eagles are going to give Hurts a payday during the 2027 offseason.

Hurts, 28, has made three Pro Bowl appearances and was named an All-Pro in 2022. He's led the Eagles to two Super Bowl appearances and won Super Bowl LIX. For most teams, that would be enough to cement his place for the long term.

But Eagles general manager Howie Roseman wasn't afraid to have his team turn from Carson Wentz to Nick Foles. After Foles won the Super Bowl, the Eagles gave him the 2018 season before going in a different direction at quarterback.

Nothing about how the Eagles deal with their quarterback situation in the offseason should be surprising. Philadelphia is built to withstand more than just one player. Hurts has been a special player at times for the Eagles, but it's unclear if the past is enough for a team that wants to compete for the Super Bowl in the near future.
