The Eagles could be a landing spot for a former champion who could help the offense.
The Philadelphia Eagles are getting ready to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars this coming week, with the team looking to bounce back from two straight losses.
Philadelphia hasn't looked great in the past two weeks, with the offense looking extremely poor. The Eagles have been trying to figure out how to navigate this, but to no avail at this point.
One reason for the struggles has been injuries hitting this team, with both star running back Saquon Barkley and star wide receiver DeVonta Smith missing time. Barkley is dealing with a hamstring injury, and he is now excited to be week-to-week going forward.
And to make matters worse for the Eagles' backfield plans, Barkley's backup Tank Bigsby is heading to the injured reserve. This leaves Philadelphia fairly thin at the position, but the team can always look to make some sort of trade to bolster the unit.
NFL analyst Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report listed a few players who could be on the move at some point this season, listing running back Kenneth Gainwell of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In this, Knox mentioned the Eagles as a potential landing spot for the veteran running back.
Given where the Eagles are in terms of injuries, adding someone like Gainwell could make a lot of sense. The two sides have familiarity with one another, with Gainwell having played in Philadelphia for a few years.
The Eagles drafted Gainwell in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, giving him his first opportunity in the league. The running back was more of a backup during his tenure with Philadelphia, but he did help the team win the Super Bowl in 2024.
Gainwell could be a good option for the Eagles to consider, giving this team some depth, even past the injuries. The veteran spent last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, putting up some nice numbers.
With Pittsburgh, Gainwell posted 1,023 scrimmage yards and eight touchdowns, showing what he could do. This helped him earn a two-year contract from the Buccaneers this offseason, but with Tampa Bay struggled out of the gates, a trade could be had.
Overall, this could be a low-risk move for the Eagles to consider doing, but one that could have massive ramifications on the next few weeks of the season. Since there is familiarity between the sides, it could be beneficial, and the Eagles may be able to get back on track sooner rather than later.
