Phialdelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was given an A-grade for his performance against Washington in Week 1.
The Philadelphia Eagles were able to come away with a big win over the Washington Commanders in Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season.
While it wasn't pretty at times, Philadelphia was able to hold on to earn the victory. The final score came in at 24-22, with the Eagles' defense making a big stop on a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
In the game, quarterback Jalen Hurts was able to silence some of his doubters. Hurts finished the contest by throwing for 203 yards on 14-of-25 pass attempts for three touchdowns and zero interceptions.
The veteran quarterback also had 46 yards rushing, leading the Eagles to a massive division win. After the game, Hurts NFL analyst Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report gave report card grades for each quarterback around the league.
For Hurts, Sobleski handed out an A in the win.
"After last season's continued in-fighting and stagnant offensive effort, the Eagles and quarterback Jalen Hurts started fresh this fall. Despite Browns' departure, Hurts was particularly effective driving the ball down the field…Philadelphia's offense is built around a talented offensive line and an effective ground attack. Hurts struggled to make opponents pay off the play-action game in 2025. He looks to be back on track for the start of the current campaign," Sobleski wrote.
Hurts was able to push the ball down the field against Washington, completing six-of-nine passes. This was a big problem for the Eagles in 2025, and a main reason why so many people were down on Hurts coming into the year.
While this was just one game, it shows that Hurts can do damage without star wide receiver A.J. Brown. Brown, who was traded over the offseason, was a key weapon for Hurts on offense over the last few years, and there were questions about how the team would look without him.
But at least for one game, Hurts showed that he can still be an effective player, making winning plays when it matters the most. Hurts put the Eagles in a position to win the game, and this is all any team can ask for from its quarterback each week.
There are certainly aspects of the game to clean up, but overall, it was a solid 2026 debut for Hurts. The Eagles will be heading on the road to face the Tennessee Titans in Week 2, looking to move to 2-0 on the year.
