Jalen Hurts shut his critics up by playing very well in the Philadelphia Eagles' Week 1 win against the Washington Commanders.
Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts threw a lot of interceptions in training camp while learning Sean Mannion's offense. Hurts' critics were quick to point that out.
However, in Week 1 against the Washington Commanders, Hurts' naysayers were nowhere to be found. Why? Because the one-time Super Bowl MVP had an outstanding game, going 14/25 through the air for 203 passing yards and three passing touchdowns.
Hurts also had seven carries for 46 rushing yards for the Eagles, who beat the Commanders by a final score of 24-22.
"It goes back to all 11 being on the same page and then me taking responsibility and the opportunities I have with the ball in my hand," Hurts said after the game. "When you're playing a position, a lot of it is about making sure you're in the right play, when you're doing the right thing that takes no talent. Are we in the best run? Are we protecting ourselves in protection? Is everybody aligned doing those little things first? That is the most important thing."
Dallas Goedert caught two touchdown passes and newcomer Dontayvion Wicks caught one in his first game with the Eagles, who are 6-0 in Week 1 with Hurts under center.
"Yeah," Hurts said when asked if there are instances when he feels it's time to take over in a game. "But it's not something that's forced ... I think it's just about meeting the moment when your opportunity comes."
Hurts may have struggled during training camp, but that doesn't matter since he played well when it mattered most.
"Jalen has worked extremely hard at that portion of his game," Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said after the game. "He really can throw. He just puts the ball on the money in those situations, which helps you be explosive. On the first one to [WR] Tay [Wicks], the one to DeVonta, he's worked at it. Obviously, highly talented person and a highly talented football player, but there is no secret to this. The plays that are made on Sunday were made because of the work that was put in in OTAs, in the offseason, in training camp. That happens Wednesday through Friday. There is no secret there. It takes what it takes and he's worked his [butt] off on that."
Hurts and the Eagles face the Tennessee Titans in Week 2.
Philadelphia will be heavily favored to win that contest.
