Should the Philadelphia Eagles reunite with Josh Sweat?
The Philadelphia Eagles have been named an ideal landing spot for Arizona Cardinals edge rusher Josh Sweat by NFL analyst Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report.
Sweat is reportedly not happy in Arizona, and he used to play for Philadelphia, making a trade between the Cardinals and Eagles logical.
"While Arizona may not be publicly angling to move the 29-year-old, that doesn't mean it won't accept a strong offer," Knox wrote. "Sweat should hope it will since the Cardinals are more likely to contend for the top pick in the 2027 draft than a playoff spot. Sweat should hope that he can parlay the most prolific season of his career into an opportunity with a contender in need of pass-rush help."
For Arizona last season, Sweat put up 12 sacks, 20 solo tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 17 QB hits in 17 games. The Cardinals went 3-14 and missed the playoffs again.
Sweat has played for the Eagles and Cardinals. He has 55 sacks, 168 solo tackles, 67 tackles for loss and 114 QB hits.
The Eagles' defense finished fifth in the NFL in scoring defense last season, giving up only 19.1 points per game. Philadelphia's 56.8% completion percentage allowed led the league, while its 75.4 passer rating ranked second. Those numbers would likely be even better with Sweat back in the fold next to Jalen Carter, Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell.
Philadelphia lost Jaelan Phillips to the Carolina Panthers in free agency, so its defensive pressure could drop off next season.
Philly's lack of a consistent pass rush is why the team was willing to part with a third-round pick for a half-season of Phillips last season. It's why the Eagles should make a play to bring Sweat back into the fold now.
Philadelphia won the NFC East again last season but lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the wild-card round of the playoffs. It has been a busy offseason for the Eagles, who traded A.J Brown to the New England Patriots, acquired Dontayvion Wicks from the Green Bay Packers, traded up for Makai Lemon on Day 1 of this year's draft and signed Hollywood Brown in free agency.
With training camp here, let's see if the Eagles make a blockbuster trade for Sweat, who is better suited to play for a contender at this stage of his career.
