With the 2026 NFL Free Agency period quickly approaching, the Philadelphia Eagles and general manager Howie Roseman have a golden opportunity to reload the current roster prior to the upcoming season.
One of the main talking points surrounding the franchise this offseason has been within the trenches, as offensive linemen coach Jeff Stoutland announced last month that he will not return for the 2026 NFL season.
In addition to the line growing older, it’s clear that Roseman and the front office must plan for the future in free agency, especially with a familiar face now hitting the market.
According to NFL insider Jeremy Fowler on Wednesday morning, the Los Angeles Chargers intend to release former Eagles’ offensive linemen Mekhi Becton less than a week before the free agency window officially opens.
Former Philadelphia Eagles' offensive guard Mekhi Becton (Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images)Becton, a former first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, was unable to live up to the hype throughout his first couple of seasons in the NFL. As the Jets’ starting left tackle as a rookie, the Louisville Cardinals’ standout showed flashes of promise, but he did manage to allow seven sacks over 412 pass blocking snaps.
Unfortunately for Becton, he was unable to take the next step in his career after suffering a season-ending injury in 2021. And once he made his return to the field in the following year, Becton allowed a total of 12 sacks, resulting in New York parting ways with him at the end of the 2023 season.
Luckily for the Eagles, signing him for the 2024 season paid off in a massive way, as Becton became the team’s starting right guard during the organization’s Super Bowl-winning season. However, due to his one-year deal with Philadelphia, the young offensive lineman tested the waters in free agency and signed with the Chargers in 2025.
Now, Becton has an opportunity to join the Eagles’ roster this offseason after his poor stint with the Chargers. While there may not be a starting role available for him heading into next season, if Roseman can land him for a cheap deal, Becton would be a perfect depth piece for Philadelphia in 2026.
