Falcons Lose to Buccaneers in Rain Soaked, Turnover Filled Shutout in Tampa

The Atlanta Falcons had a rough day.

The Atlanta Falcons lost an ugly one on Sunday afternoon, being shut out 16-0 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a day where it was a monsoon for most of the game.

Offensively, it was a complete and utter disaster for Atlanta with four interceptions from Michael Penix Jr. including three in the first half. At the break, Penix was 2/10 for just 24 yards and the three picks, and things did not get any better in the second half. He finished 8 of 24 for 125 yards and the four picks.

Most concerning was the lack of a ground game despite the fact that the game script called for it. Atlanta could not reach 100 yards on the ground while Tampa Bay's entire offense depended on the ground game. Baker Mayfield incredibly did not need to complete a single pass, only throwing three times as the Buccaneers ran for 324 yards on the ground.

Buccaneers Break Falcons Spirit with Ground Game in Rain

Early on, Tampa Bay clearly decided they were not even going to attempt to throw the ball in this weather, and the decision wound up paying off. Bucky Irving was able to account for 170 rushing yards while Kenny Gainwell added 140, and the Buccaneers simply lined up and beat up Atlanta with this game plan.

Meanwhile, Bijan Robinson was only able to rack up 76 rushing yards on 19 carries, and while he did not have a bad day, the Falcons were not able to do enough on the ground to support Penix and the passing game.

Tampa Bay dominated in just about every fashion including obviously turnovers as well as time of possession. In total yardage, it was the Buccaneers winning 322 to 224. Most notably, it was the 0-12 on third down for the Falcons which really stood out in a game where they could not muster any points.

At the end of the day, Atlanta fans should not heavily panic as it's tough to make major evaluations from a game which was such a mess weather wise. The Falcons were the second best team on the field today and that is not up for debate, but ultimately, this is one that can be bounced back from.

Next up is a trip to Spain to face the Cincinnati Bengals, where a better offensive performance will obviously be needed to have any shot. Atlanta should flush this one and move on, because with everything still in front of them, this was a forgettable afternoon.
