The Atlanta Falcons can make a major statement.
The Atlanta Falcons are headed into an absolutely massive game on Sunday afternoon on the road which could determine the new favorite in the NFC South against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
This team is coming off a massive win last week against the previously undefeated San Francisco 49ers, and while this league is week to week, last week showed Atlanta is very much a threat to win this division. Too often especially in a weak division like the NFC South, the winner comes down to the razor thin margins in these games, and this is the first of two meetings with Tampa Bay.
A game clear of the 2-5 Buccaneers at 3-4, here are the three things Atlanta must do in order to create some additional space there:
Don't Let Baker Mayfield Get Confident
Mayfield returned from injury during Tampa Bay's absolute drubbing of the Carolina Panthers last week, but he was not asked to do a whole lot because of the nature of the game. After throwing 11 passes last week, Mayfield has not really been fully tested since his return, but this is a good Falcons defense capable of doing just that.
Atlanta needs to get after the Buccaneers QB early and often, because once he gets going, Mayfield can be difficult to stop. If the Falcons can wreak havoc early and find a way to take an early lead, they will have a great chance to leave Tampa Bay with a win.
Win Turnover Battle
Much like Atlanta last week, the Buccaneers won the turnover battle against the Panthers 4-0, and that is why the game was as lopsided as it was. In all likelihood, things are not going to be so out of balance here and the game could come down to one or two plays.
If this is indeed the case, creating more turnovers than Tampa Bay could be exactly the edge Atlanta needs in order to win this game.
Get Back to Running the Football
As great as last week was for the Falcons, Bijan Robinson had a relatively quiet day. Part of this was game script, but when Atlanta has been at its best this season, it's been because they were not only stopping the run but also running the ball with a ton of success.
A big day from Robinson would be very tough for the Buccaneers to overcome, and if they can get him going from the opening whistle, it could set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.
