Falcons HC Does Not Give Update on Quarterback Situation Ahead of Week 2

The Atlanta Falcons do not know who will be out there.

The Atlanta Falcons did not perform well on the offensive side of the ball during their Week 1 defeat at the hands of the the Pittsburgh Steelers following the surprising quarterback hand they were dealt days before the game.

After Michael Penix Jr. was not ready to go for the start of the season, the reigns were handed to Tua Tagovailoa. Unfortunately, an oblique issue suffered at the end of the week during practice prevented him from being able to go, which left Cooper Rush to be thrown to the wolves against the ferocious Steelers pass rush.

The way things unfolded Sunday understandably has fans asking what the situation is going to be in Week 2 with the Carolina Panthers coming to town for a divisional home opener. Unfortunately, head coach Kevin Stefanski did not offer much in the way of news during his press conference on Monday.

Stefanski on Falcons QB Situation: "No Updates"

Stefanski was asked specifically about the health of both Penix and Tagovailoa, and he just did not have any information to offer in the way of positive or negative. This can be interpreted a few different ways, especially for Penix.

If the plan for the lefty was for him to miss the first couple of games of the season, Stefanski would likely be able to make the announcement now that he won't play. It seems the organization is truly taking the Penix situation day by day and will have to continue to evaluate.

Physically, Penix has been cleared, but he and the team felt he needed more reps in order to actually be ready to play. The psychology of returning from a major knee injury for a player like Penix who has dealt with several already is difficult, and if he is playing to not get injured he will not be able to play well.

As for Tagovailoa, it seems like he's dealing with a more complicated injury situation with a part of the body which is obviously critical for the kind of rotation a quarterback needs to have to throw the football.

If Atlanta is going to not be forced to start Rush again, it seems Penix may be their best chance of making it happen.

Regardless though, Stefanski either does not know how realistic that is right now or does not feel like it's in the best interest of the team to reveal the situation.
