The Atlanta Falcons may not have the guy.

The Atlanta Falcons dropped another game on Sunday afternoon to the Chicago Bears, their second straight defeat which dropped them to now 0-3 in their own building.

Many are to blame for the way Atlanta simply came out flat and uninspired against a very strong Bears team, and while he was far from the only reason the Falcons were not able to win, Michael Penix Jr. certainly did not play well enough. Finishing with less than 60 percent completed passes as well as a turnover at the end of the game which ultimately ended it, Penix looked uncomfortable for a huge portion of the game and it showed on the stat sheet.

One of his calling cards is an ability to get rid of the football without getting hit, but he took five sacks, and on a day where Chicago brought a whole lot of pressure, it looked to be a bit much for the young lefty. It's not to say that Penix could not turn into a franchise quarterback, but right now, it's tough to see that path happening under this coaching staff in Atlanta.

Falcons Will Move On from Penix if Season Continues This Way

This season for Atlanta is not just the start of a new era for a franchise which has seen some dark years as of late, it's also an audition for Penix to prove he is the quarterback of the future for this team. While he has shown some flashes, Sunday afternoon's performance was not good enough, and if he were to play that way the rest of the season, the Falcons will be in the market for someone new next year.

Everyone wants it to work out between Penix and Atlanta, and while he may not be the problem for this team, he has clearly not proven to be the solution to this point either.

This is a building year for the franchise, and while any sort of postseason hopes would be just a cherry on top, at the end of the day Penix needs to give this organization a reason to keep him around next year. Right now, he has not done that just yet, and things are trending in the wrong direction with a second straight loss.

The coaching staff and the fans will be keeping a very close eye on this offense the rest of the way, and the play of Penix over the next couple of months is going to make a whole lot of things very clear.
