The Atlanta Falcons have made a move.
The Atlanta Falcons made a move on Wednesday to give themselves some more depth at the linebacker position by plucking a former high profile draft pick off the practice squad roster of the Cincinnati Bengals.
As first reported by Jordan Schultz, Atlanta is signing linebacker Brian Asamoah II off the practice squad of the Bengals after a recent workout for the former Oklahoma Sooners star went well. Asamoah was a third round selection for the Minnesota Vikings back in 2022 and spent time there as well as with the Tennessee Titans and Las Vegas Raiders before heading to Cincinnati.
While he may not be able to earn a role on the defense right out of the gate barring some injuries or poor play, he will instantly likely slot into a special teams role and provide some depth to a defense that has been largely impressive to this point in the season.
Asamoah Was Once Seen as Potential Future Star
Recording 17 tackles as a rookie in Minnesota, Asamoah just never really fully took the next step and after three seasons with the Vikings, he was waived by the team before the 2025 season and has been a mostly practice squad player since then.
While he likely is not going to become a starter on the defense, his sideline to sideline speed make him an excellent special teams contributor and he has shown in some small doses throughout his career an ability to cover opposing tight ends at time Ultimately, his limited size has kept him from being a fixture on any defense and barring something unforeseen that will be the case here in Atlanta.
With that being said though, special teams are extremely valuable, and if he can make any sort of impact there, that could be a significant boost to a unit who could always use it.
Special teams coach Craig Aukerman is one of the best in football, and now he gets another chess piece to move around and help on kickoff coverage and however he sees fit. Ultimately, it will be up to Asamoah to earn a role and stay on this roster throughout the season, but this is a wonderful opportunity to establish himself as a roster regular and help this Falcons team win some football games.
Keep an eye on him as soon as this week to be someone who makes some big plays in the special teams phase of the game.
