Promising second-year safety Caleb Ransaw must now overcome another serious injury after being placed on IR with a knee injury
The Jacksonville Jaguars’ defense suffered a blow this week when promising second-year safety Caleb Ransaw was placed on injured reserve after sustaining a knee injury in the first quarter in the team’s nail-biting Week 4 triumph over the Cincinnati Bengals.
While losing Ransaw for at least the next four games is a tough break for Jacksonville’s defense, it is an even tougher break for Ransaw.
Ransaw was the Jaguars’ third-round pick in 2025 out of Tulane. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to stay healthy so far during his young career. Ransaw had an impressive offseason as a rookie last year before he suffered a serious foot injury. The injury cost him his entire rookie campaign.
When he returned to practice this past offseason, Ransaw picked up right where he left off. The 23-year-old looked good in practices and was competing for the all-important third safety role in coordinator Anthony Campanile’s defense.
He had started to carve out a role on defense, playing in 23% of the team’s defensive snaps through four games. Ransaw was also a major piece of Jacksonville’s special teams, playing in more than 50% of the total plays on special teams.
With starting safety Eric Murray in concussion protocol, the back of Jacksonville’s defense is becoming shorthanded.
Murray’s injury could have provided Ransaw an opportunity to earn a much larger role. Instead, the road has been paved for Jalen Huskey, this year’s third-round pick, to make his NFL debut this Sunday when the Jaguars take on the Philadelphia Eagles in London.
“I’ve dreamed of this moment, and I’m ready to take full advantage of this opportunity,” Hiskey said about making his debut.
Ransaw’s Return This Season In Doubt
Ransaw must miss at least four games after being placed on injured reserve. However, head coach Liam Coen was noncommittal when asked if Ransaw would return this season.
That sounds damning for his chances of a quick return, and it's a gut punch for a young player who worked so hard and was so excited to get back to just playing football this season.
Hopefully, Ransaw’s injury isn't season-ending, and he will be able to return once the four-game minimum is over.
Either way, it is an obstacle Jacksonville’s defense must overcome, though the team is still much healthier than the Eagles are heading into their Week 5 showdown across the pond.
Final Thoughts
Wishing Ransaw a speedy recovery as he now faces the second serious injury of his young career, which hasn’t even been able to get off the ground yet.
In his absence, and possibly Murray’s as well, it will be exciting to see what Huskey can do now that he will almost certainly get the first snaps of his rookie season.
Like Ransaw, Huskey is a young and talented safety. He has terrific ball-hawking skills, which were on full display throughout his college career.
Hopefully, those skills will carry over to the NFL, and Huskey can make his presence felt against the Eagles this Sunday.
