The Jaguars had to fight until the last second for the win on Sunday in London. Who helped Jacksonville pull out the victory? And whose performances did the Jaguars have to overcome?
In the NFL, the standings don’t care if you play great and win by 30, or if you play your worst game of the season and win by two on a last-second 57-yard field goal, as the Jacksonville Jaguars did on Sunday in London.
A win is a win, and the Jaguars got one against the Philadelphia Eagles after Cam Little drilled a 57-yarder as time expired inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
A miraculous win usually needs a couple of memorable performances, and the Jaguars certainly had more than one.
On the flip side, a team usually needs a miracle because several players had individual performances the team had to overcome.
The Jaguars certainly had their fair share of those as well.
Let’s check out my five winners and five losers from Jacksonville’s walk-off triumph over the Eagles.
Five Winners
1. Parker Washington: Washington not only scored both of Jacksonville’s touchdowns, a 51-yarder that was about one yard passing and 50 yards Washington running past and around the defense and a 27-yard, one-handed beauty on fourth-and-five that gave the Jaguars a late lead, but he likely added millions of dollars to his next contract.
The fourth-year star finished with six catches for 124 yards and two scores, once again proving he is Jacksonville’s most explosive weapon.
2. DaVon Hamilton: I can’t remember the last time a long snapper got so much attention or seemed so important.
The 6’4, 335-pound defensive tackle was forced into emergency duty at long snapper after Ross Matiscik left with an early injury. Without Hamilton’s ability to do the job, Jacksonville loses.
Even though his snaps were high, and one resulted in a missed extra point that almost cost the Jaguars the game, Hamilton got the job done on Little’s game-winner, giving a fairy-tale ending to maybe the most memorable long-snapping performance in history.
3. Cam Little: Not only did Little get to show off his leg and prove he has ice water running through his veins on his 57-yard game-winner, but he had to deal with the entire kicking operation being upended without Matiscik.
Punter/Holder Logan Cooke deserves a ton of credit for handling the high snaps, but Little wouldn’t allow the timing being thrown off to affect him.
4. Josh Cameron: The rookie WR continues to see his role increase and continues to make a big impact.
Cameron caught three passes for 43 yards, including a big 32-yarder.
Oh, and he ran back the opening kickoff back for a 90-yard touchdown, only to have it not count because of offsetting penalties and a fight at midfield that led to the ejections of Jaguars’ DE Bryan Thomas Jr. and Eagles’ starting LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
5. Bhayshul Tuten: Tuten may have only had 72 rushing yards on 22 carries (3.3 YPC), but he showed his toughness throughout the game.
72 rushing yards, and 73 yards came after contact. That’s an incredible stat.
The offensive line allowed Tuten to get blown up in the backfield on several occasions, but the second-year RB never relented and racked up several impressive runs as the game progressed. There were plenty of plays where Tuten was able to make something out of absolutely nothing.
He also continues to make the most of his opportunities as a receiver, catching two passes for 24 yards.
Five Losers
1. Brian Thomas Jr.: The third-year WR continues to be a non-factor. BTJ didn’t have a catch against the Eagles. He also failed to get his second foot down in bounds on a would-be TD.
Thomas isn't getting many opportunities these days, so he must make the play when he does. He couldn’t on Sunday and continues to lose snaps and targets to Cameron.
At this point, it might be better for everyone if Thomas got a fresh start with another team. He has clearly fallen out of favor in Jacksonville.
2. The Offensive Line: Another game with the line being called for a ridiculous number of penalties. The line was also bullied by the Eagles’ defensive line, especially Jalen Carter, who was a one-man wrecking crew.
To make matters much worse, left tackle Anton Harrison was carted off with what looks like a serious injury. It was reported as a knee injury, but there are concerns about a season-ending Achilles injury.
3. Liam Coen: Coen, normally a brilliant play-caller, made several questionable calls against the Eagles, including a jet sweep from fourth-and-goal from the one on the last play of the first half, which lost six yards.
The Jaguars had two separate first-and-goals from the one and got points on neither. For an offensive genius like Coen, that is unacceptable.
The Jaguars were also penalized 13 times for 100 yards one week after being flagged 13 times for 125 yards. That lack of discipline falls squarely on the head coach.
4. Montaric Brown: Aside from Travis Hunter, none of the Jaguars’ CBs had a good game. The Eagles were without star WR DeVonta Smith, but the group of Dontayvion Wicks, rookie Makai Lemon, and even Darius Cooper all had big games.
Brown is the one who makes the list because not only did he have a poor game, but he also left the game with a hamstring injury after getting burned on Cooper’s 62-yard TD.
5. Chris Rodriguez Jr.: Not only did Rodriguez get only two carries, but he was unable to score on a goal-line run (and nearly fumbled). He also missed his block on the doomed jet sweep to end the first half, a major factor in the play’s absolute failure.
Rodriguez was supposed to have a real chance to be Jacksonville’s RB1 this season. Instead, his role has been minimal through five games, and he has been inconsistent when he does get touches.
