Jaguars starting left tackle Anton Harrison is set to have arthroscopic knee surgery, which will determine the extent of the damage after being injured Sunday in London.
Jacksonville Jaguars left tackle is expected to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery when he returns from London.
The news was broke by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Ian Rapoport Tuesday morning.
Per Rapoport, the extent of the damage will be determined during the surgery, and the time Harrison needs to recover could be anywhere from 3-5 weeks to 3-4 months. If it is the latter, Harrison would be out for at least the rest of the regular season.
The loss of Harrison is a huge blow for Jacksonville’s offensive line, which had been a work in progress since before the season started.
Harrison, who had been the Jaguars’ starting right tackle since he was drafted in the first round in 2023, swapped sides with Cole Van Lanen before the season began.
A back injury suffered by right guard Patrick Mekari forced left guard Ezra Cleveland to also switch positions, giving third-round rookie Emmanuel Pregnon the starting LG job.
Harrison had to be carted off in the third quarter of Jacksonville’s last-second victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. He was ruled out for the remainder of the game shortly after the non-contact injury.
The injury was reported as a knee injury by the team, though some feared Harrison may have suffered a season-ending Achilles injury.
Whatever the injury was, it looked bad. The image of Harrison lying on the field before the cart arrived was a devastating one, and it had the look of a player whose season was lost and who would have to endure a long road to recovery.
Some reports on Monday made it appear that Harrison's injury may not be as bad as originally feared.
The news from Fowler and Rapoport offers hope that Harrison may be able to return after only a month or so, but his official timeline will be determined after the arthroscopic surgery takes place.
Walker Little Likely To Fill In
After Harrison’s exit against the Eagles, Walker Little took over at left tackle and is likely to fill in while Harrison is out.
Little was the team’s starting LT to begin last season, but struggled until an injury of his own caused him to miss several weeks. Van Lanen took over and kept the spot even when Little returned.
With Van Lanen still recovering from an injury suffered in Week 18 of last season, Little began the Jaguars’ offseason program as the team’s LT once again, but continued to struggle, opening the door for Harrison’s position switch.
Little is still considered a valuable swing tackle and was even named to ESPN’s “All-Backup Team.”
Jacksonville may return Van Lanen to the left side and use Little at RT, but it appears Little will get a crack at holding down Harrison’s spot on the left side first.
Final Thoughts
Losing Harrison is a massive blow for the Jaguars. He had really taken to playing LT, which was his natural position in college at Oklahoma.
Hopefully, for Harrison and the Jaguars, the surgery will not reveal extensive damage, and he will be able to return in only a few weeks.
Jacksonville has jumped out to a 4-1 record and already holds a two-game lead over the 2-3 Indianapolis Colts. In Week 6, the Jaguars play the Houston Texans in their second straight game in London and first divisional matchup of the season. The Texans were a popular Super Bowl pick, but have stumbled out of the gate to a 1-4 record and just earned their first win on Sunday over the 0-5 Tennessee Titans.
The Jaguars have an opportunity to put the Texans’ season on life support in Week 6, but the loss of Harrison makes beating Houston a much taller task.
