Jacksonville has another tough matchup in Week 4 on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals. Here are my five keys for a Jaguars victory.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have another tough task laid in front of them on Sunday when they go on the road to face the Cincinnati Bengals, their third straight game against an AFC contender (Or is it their fourth? Cleveland is 3-1 now).
The last time the Jaguars went on the road, their nine-game regular-season winning streak was ended in a tough loss to the Denver Broncos. In that game, Jacksonville held a double-digit lead in the second half before eventually falling to last year's AFC No. 1 seed.
However, the Jaguars showed the entire NFL what they are made of last week by responding to the loss with a 35-6 demolition of the New England Patriots, last year’s AFC champions. Bouncing back like that is a huge step for any team attempting to go from good to great.
Sunday, Jacksonville has another opportunity to prove it is one of the league’s elite teams by beating the Bengals in Cincinnati, who have moved back into contender status with a healthy Joe Burrow and a much-improved defense and offensive line. Walking out of Cincinnati with a win will be no easy accomplishment. The Bengals still have one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses, while their trade for star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, combined with several additions in free agency and the draft, has completely transformed the defense.
The Jaguars will have to be at the top of their game to pull out their first road win of the season.
Let’s check out my five keys to a Jaguars’ victory.
Keys To Victory
1. Contain Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins: Easier said than done. Chase and Higgins are the best WR duo in the league, and Travis Hunter and the other Jacksonville cornerbacks will have to bring their A-game to slow the pair down.
Hunter recorded his first career interception last week against the Patriots. His elite ball-hawking skills have caused opposing QBs to avoid him as much as possible this season, but Chase and Higgins are too good not to target, no matter who is covering them.
Hunter gets a great chance to prove his CB1 ability. Montaric Brown, Jarrian Jones, and Jourdan Lewis will have to rise to the occasion as well. If they all step up, Jacksonville has a great shot at winning.
2. Get pressure on Burrow: The best way to slow down Chase and Higgins is to make sure Burrow doesn’t have all day to find them.
Cincy’s offensive line has been a weakness for years, but it is much better this season. Right tackle Amarius Mims has become one of the best in the biz, playing 111 pass-blocking snaps without allowing a single QB hit.
More impressive is that he has done so while going against Rueben Bain Jr., Danielle Hunter, Will Anderson Jr., and T.J. Watt.
Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker must find a way to get to Burrow, and Sunday will be a great time for the Jaguars to start getting pressure from their interior defensive line.
3. More Bhayshul Tuten: Tuten has been great thus far as Jacksonville’s lead back. He should see a heavy workload to control the clock and keep Burrow & Co. off the field.
If the Jaguars have success with the run, it will free up Trevor Lawrence to use more play-action and take his shots downfield to Parker Washington and the rest of his arsenal of weapons.
4. Response from Brian Thomas Jr.: Much like last season, BTJ has not gotten in on the offense’s fun. His drops against Denver had consequences, limiting his playing time to only 23 snaps against the Patriots.
How will he respond? Will he finally let his talent shine through? Or will he struggle mentally and look disinterested, like he did at times last season?
Thomas only has seven catches for 88 yards through three games. He is too good to be a non-factor.
5. Get takeaways: The Jaguars’ defense thrives on forcing turnovers. They have six in the team's three games, and five have come in the team’s two wins.
The Bengals are going to move the ball Sunday. But getting multiple turnovers will be the defense’s equalizer. More possessions for Lawrence and the offense will be just what the doctor ordered for a victory.
Final Thoughts
The game between the Jaguars and Bengals is one of the crown jewels of the NFL's Week 4 slate.
If the Jaguars walk out of Paycor Stadium 3-1, with victories against the Bengals and Patriots already under their belt, they will be in great shape before travelling across the pond for back-to-back "home" games.
It will be hard to beat the Bengals in Cincinnati, but if the Jaguars can take care of these five keys, they have a great chance to make another statement to the rest of the league.
