Trevor Lawrence and Liam Coen had a terrific first season together. Their partnership is quickly rising in the rankings of the NFL's best duos.

In their first season together in 2025, Jacksonville Jaguars' quarterback Trevor Lawrence and first-year head coach Liam Coen laid the foundation for what could become a special relationship.

Lawrence was drafted by Jacksonville first overall in 2021. He came into the NFL as the best QB prospect since Andrew Luck. Despite his immense potential, Lawrence never was able to put it all together and become the elite player he was expected to be.

When the Jaguars hired Coen, who had been the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he would be Lawrence's fourth HC in five seasons.

Jacksonville's hope was that Coen would be able to do the same for Lawrence that he did for Baker Mayfield in Tampa. Mayfield, himself also a top overall pick, had career highs of 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdowns, while completing a whopping 71.4% of his passes in his lone season with Coen.

Coen has already earned a reputation as one of the league's top offensive minds and best play-callers.

Just as Jacksonville had hoped, Lawrence made tremendous strides under Coen. He threw for over 4,000 yards and a career-high 29 TDs, while adding 359 yards and an additional nine scores on the ground. Lawrence was an MVP finalist for the first time in his career and helped lead the Jaguars to a 13-4 season, a nine-game improvement from the previous season.

Lawrence finally has the right coach to bring out his full potential, and his partnership with Coen is just getting started. They are on their way to becoming one of the best QB-HC pairings in the NFL.

They are moving up that list quickly. Garrett Podell of CBS Sports already has the pair ranked as the 10th-best duo in the league.

Got Better As Season Progressed

Lawrence has already talked about Coen's offense being "stressful mentally" to learn. As Podell notes, Lawrence got better as the season progressed.

A lot better.

"The Jacksonville Jaguars went 13-4 in 2025 after going 4-13 in 2024, making them the third team in NFL history to post a 13-win season after a 13-loss season. The Jaguars' duo of quarterback Trevor Lawrence and head coach Liam Coen helped power this surge in a major way.

"Lawrence initially struggled with picking up Coen's Shanahan/McVay tree offshoot scheme, but once it clicked, he put the league on notice. He led the entire NFL in total touchdowns, with 24 across the final eight games of the regular season, a stretch in which Jacksonville went an unblemished 8-0 to win the AFC South. Lawrence's 38 total touchdowns stand as the third-most in football last season behind only the league's last two MVP winners: Matthew Stafford (46) and Josh Allen (39).

"The final six games of the regular season were this duo's masterpiece: Lawrence produced an absurd 19 total touchdowns to only a single turnover. That feat made him just the third player in NFL history to record 19-plus total touchdowns and one or fewer turnovers in the final six games of a season, according to CBS Sports Research. The other two players to do so are 2019 Drew Brees (20 total TDs to one turnover) and 2020 NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers (21 total TDs to one turnover).

"If this duo can find more early-season consistency while breaking through in the playoffs, they could rise in 2026."

Honestly, being ranked 10th seems a bit low for Lawrence and Coen. The early offseason reports suggest the offense will take another leap forward this season. The offense is "significantly ahead" of where it was a year ago, and Lawrence's knowledge of and comfort in Coen's system is much stronger.

Coen, for his part, has already put a lot of effort into making sure his team doesn't suffer a letdown this season. He has also encouraged Lawrence to continue making plays with his legs.

Final Thoughts

Lawrence and Coen look like a perfect duo that has barely scratched the surface of what they can accomplish together.

Coen and his staff have brought stability to the Jaguars organization that it has lacked since Lawrence's arrival.

If Jacksonville's offense can take another step forward this season, expect the duo to be ranked much higher on the same list next year.
