The former MVP finalist feels "astronomical" growth entering his second year in Liam Coen’s system, mastering complex nuances to unlock a higher ceiling for the Jaguars' offense.
Trevor Lawrence is entering this season with a comfort level he didn't have last year.
In his second year playing in head coach Liam Coen's offense, the Jacksonville Jaguars' quarterback is much more familiar with the small details and nuances than he was last year, and that has put his mind at ease.
Speaking with team reporter John Oehser, Lawrence opened up about the difference he feels this offseason compared to last year.
"(Coen's offense) is just a lot more stressful mentally. I had to get used to that," Lawrence said.
"Now, I feel so much more comfortable, and the stress level is so much lower. The attention to detail is super high, though. It's not like I'm relaxing out there, but as far as the confidence and knowing what I'm doing ... now I'm paying attention to exactly how the defense is responding."
MVP Finalist In First Year With Coen
Lawrence entering the upcoming season with a different level of understanding and comfort within the offense is a scary thought for the rest of the NFL. In his first year in Coen's offense, Lawrence was an MVP finalist for the first time in his career, finishing fifth in the voting.
If Lawrence can reach another level now that he has been able to focus on mastering the offense instead of learning it, he and the Jaguars both have an incredibly high ceiling this season.
Excited For 2026
Lawrence told Oehser that the progress he has made from last offseason to this one has been "astronomical." He went on to say the entire offense is light-years ahead of where it was last season, especially in areas like timing and protection. He feels like this offseason has been much more efficient than last year.
"What we're getting to in our system, the timing, guys being on the same page of protection, the communication up front … all that stuff is so much further along because we're a year in the system," he said. "I was very happy with the work we got done."
The 26-year-old also believes that his connection with wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. will be much stronger this year than it was last. BTJ's struggles in 2025 have been among the most talked-about disappointing individual seasons in recent memory. However, Lawrence believes those issues won't surface in 2026.
"Last year, at times we just weren't on the same page for whatever reason," he said about Thomas. "We have taken a huge step in that area. He's so fast, running by guys all the time. A lot of it was looking at myself and saying, 'OK, where can I improve and get better? How can I get him the ball more accurately on time down the field, give him opportunities to go run under the ball, and make plays?'
"He's such a talented player. We just have to find those opportunities more. We talked about it a lot -- BT, Liam, all of us. It's starting to pay off and it's just the beginning."
Final Thoughts
It looks like Lawrence is confident that he can build on his phenomenal 2025 season and reach an even higher level in 2026. Now that he can focus on perfecting the little details of Coen's offense, expect the game to slow down even more for Lawrence as he enters his sixth season in Jacksonville.
If BTJ can also improve upon last season and be the player he was in 2024, the Jaguars should have a top-5 offense (at minimum) in the NFL this year.
As the team attempts to reach its first-ever Super Bowl, any improvement from Lawrence, whether physical or mental, can go a long way toward the Jaguars making a deep playoff run.
It sounds like that is exactly what Lawrence is expecting this season.
