Trevor Lawrence starting this season by playing the same way he did to end last season has people believing in him as a potential MVP winner.
This is the Trevor Lawrence the Jacksonville Jaguars and their fans have been waiting to see for years.
When Lawrence came to Jacksonville, who selected him with the first overall pick in 2021 he was thought of as a franchise savior. There hadn't been a quarterback prospect of his caliber since Andrew Luck in 2012.
Lawrence was a superstar in college at Clemson. He led the Tigers to a National Championship over Alabama and got back to the title game the following year, falling to Joe Burrow and LSU.
He was expected not only to become the face of the Jaguars but also of the entire NFL and to be a perennial MVP candidate.
Over the first four seasons of his career, Lawrence didn't meet those expectations. People began doubting whether he ever would.
Then the Jaguars hired Liam Coen as their new head coach before the 2025 season. Coen was Lawrence's fourth head coach in his first five career seasons.
Jacksonville finally got it right this time.
Coen, one of the NFL's top play-callers, had no job more important than getting Lawrence's immense talent to finally break through.
Lawrence responded with the best year of his career and was an MVP finalist for the first time. Together, he and Coen led the Jaguars to a 13-4 record and an AFC South division title. The pair quickly became one of the elite QB/HC duos in the NFL.
Despite his success, many still questioned whether Lawrence was truly one of the league's best QBs. He needed another season like last year before he would convince everybody he belonged.
Lawrence got off to a great start in Week 1 against the Browns, throwing for 245 yards and four touchdowns. It was an MVP-level performance to begin the new season. If that is the Lawrence we see going forward, he will indeed be a top candidate to take home the award.
That is what Kay Adams believes as well. On her Up & Adams show, Adams spoke about Lawrence and fully expects him to be in the MVP conversation all year.
"Under-reacting" To Lawrence
Adams starts by confidently saying people are "under-reacting" to how great Lawrence has become, and boldly predicts he'll be in the MVP conversation all season.
"We are under-reacting to the superstar that Trevor Lawrence is...He's a top tier quarterback in the league and I mean it. This is not a one-year wonder situation. I do believe that Trevor will work his way into the MVP conversation..."
Final Thoughts
The only thing I would disagree with Adams about is that Lawrence will "work his way into" the MVP conversation. I believe he is already there, especially after dominating Cleveland in Week 1 without even breaking a sweat.
Josh Allen may be the early-season favorite, but if Lawrence has another fantastic outing on the road in Denver in Week 2, he will be right in the thick of the conversation.
Coen has brought something out of Lawrence that none of Jacksonville's other head coaches were able to. As long as Coen and Lawrence remained paired together, it wouldn't be a surprise if Lawrence was part of the MVP discussion every season.
