After a dominant showing against the Patriots, Jacksonville LB Foye Oluokun believes the defense can be even better.
The Jacksonville Jaguars just put together one of their most impressive performances of the Liam Coen era.
The Jaguars absolutely destroyed the New England Patriots 35-6 on Sunday, dominating the defending AFC champions from start to finish, sending a statement to the rest of the NFL that they are not to be taken lightly.
Against the Patriots, Jacksonville's defense had a terrific showing. New England quarterback Drake Maye was intercepted twice, including Travis Hunter's first career pick, and he also lost a fumble.
The Jaguars limited New England to 83 rushing yards on 26 carries, an average of only 3.2 yards per rush. They also sacked Maye three times after not recording any sacks of Denver QB Bo Nix the previous week.
It was a tremendous effort from the defense, whose late-game collapse against the Broncos raised questions about whether it would be able to bounce back against New England.
Those questions were answered emphatically on Sunday as the defense stepped up and dominated a top-tier opponent.
Despite the incredible performance by the defense, linebacker Foye Oluokun believes there is even a higher level the defense can reach.
Speaking with Action Sports Jax, Oluokun said the defense played well on Sunday, but he thinks it can execute even better.
“Stats show probably we played well. I think we can play even better, though. I like the way that we played, I like the detail that we played with, understanding what we were going to see and how to fit it up. There’s another level of execution we can get to.”
High Standards
As one of the defense's leaders and a team captain, Oluokun has set very high standards for Jacksonville's defense.
Oluokun has long been one of the NFL's most productive linebackers, twice leading the league in tackles. He recently became the third-leading tackler in Jaguars franchise history.
Over this past offseason, the Jaguars faced a lot of criticism for not doing more to replace All-Pro linebacker Devin Lloyd. Instead of making a high-profile addition in free agency or the draft, Jacksonville decided to replace Lloyd with a competition between in-house options Ventrell Miller and Branson Combs.
Miller would eventually win the job and earn the job starting next to Oluokun. So far, Miller has done a great job in the role, making the much-criticized decision look genius.
Is Oluokun Right?
Is Oluokun right? Can Jacksonville's defense be even better than it was against the Patriots on Sunday?
It is certainly possible. Especially if Travis Hunter continues to see his playing time increase. After playing less than 60% of defensive snaps in the Jaguars' first two games, Hunter played about 73% of the snaps against the Patriots. If that continues to rise, the defense can reach another level.
Especially if Jacksonville can get more pass rush from anyone outside of star edge rushers Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker. If another edge rusher can step up to supplement those two, or if any of the team's interior linemen step up their pass rush, the defense will reach a new level.
Final Thoughts
If the Jaguars' defense can be even better than it was this past Sunday, that is a scary thought.
While Jacksonville's defense was tops in the NFL against the run last season, it was middle-of-the-pack against the pass and the pass rush was lacking.
So, yes, there is plenty of room for improvement.
Oluokun has set a high bar for his defense. If the defense can reach it, the Jaguars will be a tough out for any team as they try to reach the franchise's first-ever Super Bowl.
