Travis Hunter is quickly becoming one of the NFL's top cornerbacks and is earning comparisons to Jaguars great Jalen Ramsey.
When the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Travis Hunter second overall in 2025, they envisioned him becoming a two-way star at both wide receiver and cornerback.
So far, it hasn't really worked out that way.
As a rookie, Hunter was primarily used on offense but didn't make the instant impact most expected. He finally had a breakout performance in Jacksonville's 35-7 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in London. Hunter caught eight passes for 101 yards and his only touchdown of the season, but then suffered a knee injury in practice over the bye week, ending his season.
Heading into this season, the Jaguars decided that Hunter would be a full-time cornerback and only occasionally play receiver.
"Occasionally" has been an overstatement. Hunter has only played a total of 16 snaps on offense through Jacksonville's first four games and played zero in Week 4's road victory over the Cincinnati Bengals; it was the first time in his career that he did not see the field on offense.
However, Hunter played a career-high 76 snaps on defense against the Bengals, playing the best game of his young career. The previous week, in the Jaguars' 35-6 triumph over the New England Patriots, Hunter recorded his first interception in what was another outstanding game for the 23-year-old.
The second-year phenom is quickly developing into one of the NFL's premier cornerbacks and has been especially dominant while playing man coverage.
Hunter has been so good that he is earning comparisons to former Jaguars' star CB Jalen Ramsey, who played the first three-plus years of his illustrious career in Jacksonville after being drafted fifth overall in 2016 after a standout college career at Florida State.
Ramsey was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 2019 after playing only three games for the Jaguars that season, but remains one of the greatest players in franchise history.
In his three full seasons in Duval, Ramsey made two Pro Bowls and earned one First-Team All-Pro selection. He has made eight Pro Bowls and earned three First-Team All-Pro nods in his career.
To be compared to Ramsey is a testament to how special a player Hunter can be.
But, according to Cameron Wolfe, the buzz around the league is that Hunter is already reminding many of a young Ramsey.
Wolfe went on ESPN and talked about a text he received after the Bengals' game calling Hunter "Jalen Ramsey 2.0" and that a Jacksonville coach told him in the offseason that people will be "talking about him (Hunter) as a top-5 cornerback in football this time next year."
Final Thoughts
The way he has been playing lately, Hunter is well on his way to being thought of as a top-5 CB in the NFL.
Hall of Fame CB Champ Bailey, one of the best to ever play the position, agrees, saying Hunter has the talent to be a top-5 cornerback "in no time."
As long as he continues to play this well in his new primary position, it will be hard to fault the Jaguars for significantly reducing his role on offense.
