Two Jaguars key players secure substantial 2027 salary guarantees, impacting future payroll and team stability.
The 2026 NFL League Year just got underway and teams are setting their payrolls for the upcoming season.
Some are also beginning to add to their 2027 payroll, as well.
The Jacksonville Jaguars, for example, just had two players see their salaries for the 2027 season become fully guaranteed on Sunday, according to Spotrac.
For quarterback Trevor Lawrence, he was already guaranteed $29 million out of his $41 million in total compensation from when he signed his five-year, $275 million extension with the Jaguars in 2024. The remaining $12 million became guaranteed Sunday, the fifth day of the league year.
The Jaguars structured the deal so that Lawrence would likely stay for a long time, regardless. On the fifth day of the 2027 league year, his $46 million in total compensation for 2028 (including a $35 million option bonus) becomes fully guaranteed.
Lawrence is due $37.5 million in total compensation for 2026 and $41.5 million in 2027. Once his 2028 compensation kicks in next year, that's another $46.5 million, meaning Jacksonville will pay Lawrence $125.5 million over the next three seasons. He'll total $202 million since signing the extension in 2024.
Lawrence threw for 4,007 yards and 29 touchdowns, plus rushing for 359 yards and nine touchdowns, leading the Jaguars to a 13-4 record and an AFC South championship in 2025.
Offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen also saw money locked in for 2027. He is due $15.25 million in salary, which also became fully guaranteed Sunday. He was already guaranteed $7.75 million for 2027 when he signed a three-year, $51 million contract in December. The remaining $7.5 million became fully guaranteed this week.
Van Lanen appeared in 16 games last season for the Jaguars, including ten starts. He should now be locked in for the next two seasons, providing a versatile option, particularly at left tackle for Jacksonville. Van Lanen saw time at every position except center in 2025 for the Jaguars.
