As contract talks heat up, Christian Watson’s massive extension sets a high-stakes benchmark for Jacksonville’s breakout star to secure his future as a cornerstone of the offense.
Parker Washington and the Jacksonville Jaguars are in the middle of contract extension talks, and the extension Christian Watson received from the Green Bay Packers could influence Washington's next contract.
Watson signed a four-year, $110.5 million contract extension on Thursday morning, first reported by Adam Schefter. His extension includes a $31 million signing bonus, and his yearly average salary is $27.63 million.
The Packers' extension of Watson could impact the discussion concerning Washington's extension because of their similar production average. Watson has averaged 33.3 catches, 566 yards and 5 touchdowns in four seasons, and Washington has averaged 35.3 catches, 456 yards and 3.3 touchdowns in three seasons.
While Watson will earn $27.63 million annually, the Jaguars have another receiver on the roster making $20 million.
Jacksonville and Jakobi Meyers agreed to a three-year, $60 million contract extension several weeks after he was traded. Meyers and Watson's annual earnings set a range for Washington's extension.
Paying Washington over $20 million should not concern the Jaguars due to his ascension as the lead receiver in his third year. The 5-foot-10 receiver led the team in yards (847), receptions (58) and targets (95); he recorded one fewer touchdown than running back Travis Etienne Jr.
What Washington's extension looks like is important for Jacksonville, but the former Penn State Nittany Lion is focused on carrying over his success from last year. He wants to become the best player he can be, and he's shown up to Miller Electric Stadium as early as 5 a.m.
"I feel like I started to have more fun with it," Washington told News4Jax last Tuesday. "Just the process in itself, just working, and it's another opportunity to play the game I love. So, take advantage of that and just make the most of it."
Extending Washington would lock down Jacksonville's receiving core. Washington, Meyers and Brain Thomas Jr. lead the room, while Travis Hunter could play spots snaps and rookies Josh Cameron and CJ Williams add depth to the position.
The fourth-year receiver has blossomed into a core part of the Jaguars' offense. Jacksonville selected him with the 185th pick in the sixth round in 2023, and he has become a success story.
Out of the seven other receivers drafted in the sixth round in 2023, Washington is far and away the best. Kayshon Boutte, drafted by the New England Patriots, is the second-best receiver, hauling in 33 receptions for 551 yards and six touchdowns last season.
Watson and Meyers' contract extensions could set the market for Washington's contract if Jacksonville extends him. His production has put him within the range of a $20 million receiver.
