Head Coach Liam Coen prioritized high-intensity "Mamba" drills to sharpen competitive fire early, allowing the roster to ramp down and recover before the grueling grind of training camp.

Usually, the end of mandatory minicamp is the start of NFL players' summer vacation.

However, the Jacksonville Jaguars decided to switch it up, scheduling their mandatory minicamp, which ran from June 9-11, before the last round of OTAs (June 15-17). The Jaguars were one of only six teams to hold their minicamp before finishing their OTAs.

Head Coach Liam Coen had his reasons for the switch, and explained them to Ryan O'Halloran of The Florida Times-Union.

"It was, 'Let's get our good work in (this week) and then just kind of ramp down a little bit next week," Coen explained.

Intense Minicamp

The Jaguars certainly got plenty of "good work" in during an intense minicamp. Coen pushed his players hard during the three days. One of the highlights of day one of camp was the Jaguars' "Mamba" periods, where the first-team offense went toe-to-toe with the first-team defense.

The "Mamba" drills were intense and competitive, which was the whole point. The Jaguars' offense excelled in the battles, especially wide receivers Brian Thomas Jr. and Parker Washington.

Day two saw another terrific day from BTJ, who looks like he is on a mission to show last year's subpar season was a fluke.

Second-year cornerback Jabbar Muhammad also continued making a name for himself, turning in another eye-opening performance.

Minicamp ended Thursday with more good work from quarterback Trevor Lawrence and his receivers, who continued to have the edge versus the Jaguars' first-team defense.

Coen got exactly what he wanted from his team. The players practiced with intensity and a competitive fire that won't be seen again until training camp.

Extra Rest Will Help

With minicamp happening this week, the players now get to take it easy until training camp begins. Coen believes the extra week of rest and recovery will have a positive effect on the both the players' bodies and minds.

Of course, there are still three more scheduled OTA practices next week, but they will be much shorter and more relaxed than minicamp. Coen spoke about his goals for the upcoming OTAs.

"We're going to essentially call it a pass camp where everything that we're doing is really hyper-focused on the pass game. We'll do some 7-on-7, but the (defensive) line is going to be in pass rush drills the entire day and the offensive line will be in all pass protection drills."

Coen also said that the team will use the remaining OTAs to begin preparing for the Cleveland Browns, the Jaguars' Week 1 opponent.

Final Thoughts

Coach Coen believes that scheduling mandatory minicamp a week earlier will allow the players to enter training camp more focused and ready to work. While most teams have reversed schedules, with minicamps occurring after all OTAs have finished, Coen's 13-4 first season as head coach has earned him the trust to change things up.

As for the minicamp, Jacksonville's offense looks like it can be dominant this season. If Lawrence and his receivers can keep up this level of play, expect the QB to be an MVP finalist once again.

The players should appreciate the extra week of "rest." Now they just have to get through three more casual, toned-down practices next week.

Then their summer vacation can finally begin.
