Liam Coen reveals how integrating Hall of Famers like DeMarcus Ware into practice provides vital championship blueprints and legendary mentorship to accelerate Jacksonville’s path toward elite status.

The Jacksonville Jaguars' OTA on Monday was certainly a star-studded affair.

Head coach Liam Coen brought in several NFL legends to attend Monday's practice. From the Jacksonville organization, there were running backs Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew, and tight end Mercedes Lewis. Coen didn't just invite former Jags; he also had wide receiver A.J. Green, Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware, the McCourty twins, Devin and Jason, and former defensive line coach Mike Waufle as guests.

Coach Coen explained, in great detail, why he thinks all of those NFL greats can have a great effect not only on his players but also on himself.

"To get our guys around players who did it at a high level, whether it was here or elsewhere... just, man, if they can take any nugget from them over the next three days, we got better," Coen said. "And to get especially the McCourty twins, being in New England for those years, the level of consistency, their approach, and me picking their brains, of what that was like, that's something that's really important to me. We show our players a lot of examples throughout the offseason program, and in season, of the best of the best — Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Tom Brady. But then, those teams that were great, and going into some of those details of what it takes to be great, what it takes to sustain success over the course of years. And that's why I think it was really important to get these guys out here. We did mandatory last week, we brought them back for these days, and wanted to kind of make it worth their time, make it something that they don't feel like it's a grind."

Coen points out that, while his guests were all blessed with individual greatness, being part of great teams allows them to teach the Jaguars how to become one in 2026. They know what it takes to build and maintain success, and how to handle expectations.

Coaches Planned This Months Ago

The idea to have these all-time greats at practice was planned months ago. Coen stated that it was part of a plan made all the way back in winter.

"It was something that kind of came up organically over the wintertime," Coen explained. "When we made the decision to swap minicamp dates, that was kind of when the wheels started turning as to, what can we do creatively for the last few days of offseason program, to where these guys are gonna get somebody else's voice, you know, listening to, and just being around other guys? DeMarcus Ware will be here, you know, Hall of Fame pass rusher. We're trying to improve in areas in which hopefully that can help provide some of that."

Final Thoughts

It was pretty cool to see so many terrific players join the Jaguars for their 7th OTA. With the offseason about to ramp up next month with the start of training, having these legendary players around for the last three days of OTAs can really benefit the team.

Coen deliberately wanted to end this part of the offseason schedule on a lighter note, which is why he switched the team's mandatory minicamp to the week before OTAs finished.

Having some of the greatest Jaguars ever, as well as Hall of Fame-caliber players from other franchises, surely lightens the mood, while also providing terrific motivation for everyone on the roster.

Only in his second year as a head coach, Coen continues to prove why the Jaguars made an outstanding decision when they hired him.
