Year 2 under Liam Coen Bodes Well for Jaguars cover image

Coach Liam Coen ignited a historic turnaround, rewriting offensive records and positioning the Jaguars for future success with key player development and coaching stability.

The 2025 season was a watershed for the Jacksonville Jaguars. After the team finished with just four wins in 2024, Liam Coen came in and turned the franchise around. The Jaguars posted a 13-4 record, their first double-digit win season since 2017 and only their seventh in franchise history.

During the “car wash” on Radio Row during Super Bowl week, Coen spoke with CBSSports' Pete Prisco and talked about the Jaguars’ turnaround season, Trevor Lawrence and Travis Hunter.

While the Jaguars did lose in the first round of the playoffs, Coen spoke about how the process he put in place righted the team, establishing a record-setting offense and a playoff team for the first time since 2022.

Under Coen and offensive coordinator Grant Udinski, the Jaguars set a franchise record with 474 points scored and 55 touchdowns. Jacksonville ranked sixth in the NFL, averaging 27.9 points per game.

With Coen and Udinski working their offensive magic, quarterback Trevor Lawrence had his best season since 2023, passing for 4,007 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. That was double his passing yards and 18 more touchdown passes than the previous season, when he played 10 games due to injury. Lawrence will be healthy during this offseason for the first time in a couple of years.

During the interview, Coen responded to questions about Hunter's injury and eventual comeback. Hunter tore his LCL on Oct. 30, cutting short his highly anticipated rookie season.

Coen gave no no specific timeframe for Hunter's return, but indicated the team's superstar two-way player was already back to working out.

"Travis looks great right now," Coen said. "I actually was in the weight room working out last week -- saw him bouncing around, bouncing through. Looks great walking around."

Coen said the coaching staff would continue to evaluate Hunter's progress.

That is a blessing when you consider the franchise basically gave away almost their entire 2026 draft, including their first-round pick this year, to move up to the No. 2 spot in last year’s draft to select Hunter, considered to be a generational talent who could play on both sides of the ball.

Another reason for Jaguars fans to be excited is the underrated aspect of coaching continuity. As underperforming head coaches were led to the gallows and the proverbial chopping block, Coen was able to keep both of his coordinators.

Udinski was a candidate for the Browns' head coaching job, but withdrew from consideration and will coach the Jaguars offense in 2026, though Coen will handle play-calling duties.

Defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile also was a candidate for head coaching jobs at Baltimore and Miami, and a finalist for the Arizona Cardinals' coach job, but opted to remain with the Jaguars. That is a good thing as the Jaguars were No. 2 in the NFL in takeaways last season, with 31.

The team signed both coordinators to contract extensions that increased their salaries and will keep them in Jacksonville through 2026.

Add all that up and the Jaguars have a lot to be excited about in 2026, a second year under the direction of one of the best young coaches and staffs in pro football.
