With his Indianapolis tenure crumbling, a trade to Jacksonville offers the former Florida star a low-pressure environment to revive his career under Trevor Lawrence’s mentorship.

Anthony Richardson's career was supposed to turn out differently.

The Indianapolis Colts selected Richardson with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, betting that the raw quarterback's unreal athleticism would allow him to develop into a superstar. The Colts believed they had their next franchise QB.

It hasn't worked out that way.

As a rookie, the former Florida Gator showed flashes of his immense potential. In his first four games, Richardson completed 50 of 84 passes for 577 yards with three touchdowns and only a single interception. Modest totals, but the Colts knew they had to take their time with Richardson. However, Richardson's ability to make plays with his legs was evident immediately, rushing for 136 yards and another four scores.

A shoulder injury ended his rookie season after those four games. When he returned the following year, Richardson was unable to get his career back on track.

In 2024, Richardson lost his job to grizzled veteran Joe Flacco. He then infamously tapped out of a game because he was "tired," causing massive harm to his reputation. Last year, the Colts brought in Daniel Jones to compete with Richardson for the starting job, which Jones easily won. It was clear Richardson's days in Indy were numbered.

Now available for a late-round draft pick, should the Jacksonville Jaguars take a shot on the former top pick to solidify their backup QB spot?

Jaguars Are The Perfect Team For Richardson

That talent and athleticism are still there, and the Jaguars are the perfect team to unlock them. Head coach Liam Coen and offensive coordinator Grant Udinski are two of the brightest offensive minds in the NFL. If anyone can bring the best out of Richardson, it's those two.

Richardson would also have the benefit of entering a situation with no pressure on him. The Jaguars have an MVP finalist QB in Trevor Lawrence, who is expected to have another great season. Learning from Coen, Udinski, and Lawrence could do wonders for Richardson's development.  There is no argument against Jacksonville being a great landing spot for Richardson if he is traded.

Jacksonville Could Use An Upgrade

Nick Mullins is currently the Jaguars' QB2. While he is an adequate backup, Jacksonville could use an upgrade. Richardson's rushing ability and arm strength give him a much higher ceiling than Mullins.

It's a safe bet that Coen and Udinski could help Richardson improve his consistency as a QB. His physical traits can't be coached, though. If there is anyone worth taking a gamble on, it's someone with Richardson's potential.

Final Thoughts

Richardson for a late-round draft pick is an enticing option for Jacksonville. The risk versus reward for a player with his athletic profile would be very favorable. Richardson would provide excellent injury insurance if Lawrence were to go down.

Hopefully, the Jaguars' backup QBs never have to see the field in 2026. If they do, Jacksonville could be in a lot of trouble.

Richardson would give the team a backup capable of great things. He is a perfect example of a player whose career could take off with a change of scenery. Jacksonville has the perfect coaching staff to develop quarterbacks.

Seeing what it would cost to trade for Richardson is a phone call worth making.
