Once an afterthought, the Penn State product’s breakout 2025 campaign and elite route running have transformed Jacksonville’s depth chart, challenging high-priced stars for the top receiving spot.

As we creep closer to the start of the 2026 season, an interesting debate is materializing; who is the best wide receiver on the Jacksonville Jaguars?

NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger recently put out a tweet naming Washington as Jacksonville's best route runner. Baldinger then stated Washington may also be the Jaguars' best wide receiver.

Washington Was An Afterthought Heading Into 2025

Parker Washington began the 2025 season as an afterthought. The 2023 sixth-round pick had not made much of an impact during his first two years in Jacksonville, combining for only 48 catches and 522 yards in 2023 and 2024.

Brian Thomas Jr. was expected to solidify his spot as one of the NFL's top WRs in 2025 after a rookie season in which he accrued 87 catches, 1,282 yards, and 10 TDS, becoming the first Jaguar WR to make the Pro Bowl as a rookie.

The Jaguars also made a stunning trade during the 2025 NFL Draft. The Jags traded the 5th overall pick, along with picks 36, 126, and a 2026 first-rounder, to Cleveland for the 2nd overall pick and picks 104 and 200. Jacksonville, of course, selected two-way star Travis Hunter.

BTJ and Hunter looked to be on quick paths to superstardom. Those two, along with TE Brenton Strange and newcomers Dynami Brown and Tim Patrick, were expected to keep Washington buried on the depth chart.

Washington Exploded For Career Year

That is not what happened. Thomas Jr. could not come close to matching the success he earned as a rookie and has become the subject of constant trade rumors. Hunter struggled before an injury cut his rookie campaign short after only seven games.

Washington, now a starter, exploded for a career year. The Penn State product secured 58 receptions for 847 yards and five TDs. Not even a midseason trade for WR Jakobi Meyers could stop Washington's ascent. Washington pulled in 48 of his catches and four of his five TDs over his last 10 games, while also scoring another two touchdowns as a returner.

Can Washington Remain WR1?

Washington remaining WR1 in 2026 would be a tall task. The Jaguars will give BTJ every opportunity to recapture his rookie form. Hunter, with a season under his belt, should be much improved from last season. Meyers was also given a big-money extension to remain in Jacksonville.

Needless to say, the Jags' receiver room is loaded in 2026. Washington will have to fight and scrap for his playing time and earn his targets.

However, that is just the type of player he is: scrappy and hard-working. While it is unlikely that Washington will remain atop the depth chart, his precise route-running and ability to separate from DBs will ensure Washington remains a productive and vital piece of the Jaguars' offense.
