As the franchise tag deadline came and went Wednesday, so did the chances of Jaguars running back Travis Etienne and All-Pro linebacker Devin Lloyd being tagged.
On Feb. 12, Jaguars Roundtable reported it was unlikely these two players would be tagged. The two standout performers are now set to hit the open market when unrestricted free agency begins next week.
Both Etienne and Lloyd have been staples for the Jags, earning Pro Bowl selections and making immediate impacts.
Lloyd, drafted No. 27 overall in 2022, is coming off his best season as a pro, totaling 115 tackles, two fumble recoveries and three interceptions. Since arriving in the NFL, Lloyd has racked up 436 tackles, 18 quarterback hits, and nine picks, making him the only NFL player with 400-plus tackles, 10-plus QB hits, and eight-plus INTs in that span.
Following this past season, Lloyd earned his first Pro Bowl nod, and was named to the All-Pro Second Team.
Lloyd told 1010 XL Jax Sports Radio on Tuesday he had not "put any thought" into what was next.
"I just want to be where God wants me to be at the end of the day. That's where I want to be. And I'm waiting on that answer from him," Lloyd said. "Everything's been, you know, about trying to be the best player I can be for this team this year, and ultimately, you know, I want to be where God wants me to be."
Etienne has been Jacksonville's starter since being drafted in the first round of the 2021. Etienne's 5,136 yards from scrimmage ranks thirteenth in that span, doing so despite missing all of his rookie season with Lisfranc.
Etienne has been in trade rumors for multiple seasons now, but has remained effective for the Jaguars, posting back-to-back 1,000-plus rushing-yard seasons.
Many teams have already expressed interest in the 27-year old tailback, and rumors from Kansas City media report Etienne has shown interest in joining the Chiefs.
Losing Lloyd and/or Etienne would be a blow for a Jags squad looking to build on the momentum captured by their late-season surge last season.
