The Jacksonville Jaguars announced their eight captains for the upcoming year on Monday morning, with two new faces being honored.
The time has come around the NFL for teams to begin naming their team captains, with the Jacksonville Jaguars opening the new week with the official announcement.
On offense, starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence received the most-obvious nod, commandeering Jacksonville's offense for the sixth-straight season.
According to head coach Liam Coen, who spoke to media Monday morning, Lawrence was a unanimous vote.
"He got every single vote on the offensive side of the ball, it's kind of telling that the guys look to him," Coen added.
Last season, Lawrence led the Jaguars to a 13-4 finish, claiming the AFC South title, throwing for 4,007 yards and setting the single-season franchise record for touchdowns with 38.
With another big statistical year coupled with team success, Lawrence will move into bonafide top-10 QB in the league discussions going forward.
Rounding out the offensive captains are center Robert Hainsey and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, who are both entering their second seasons in Duval.
Hainsey, a former third-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021, will hold down the interior of Jacksonville's offensive line.
With injuries to key offensive guards on the roster, Hainsey's consistent play will be crucial early in the season.
Getting rookie lineman Emanuel Pregnon up to speed should be a priority for the veteran O-lineman.
Meyers, on the other hand, was rewarded with an extension from Jacksonville after the team traded for him last season, and can easily make the case as one of the best WR3/4s in the NFL.
Having Meyers as a third or fourth option on the outside speaks to the depth of Jacksonville's weapons and shows why expectations are high within the facility that Lawrence and the offense will be dynamic once again this season.
On special teams, punter Logan Cooke and long snapper Ross Matiscik will dawn the "C" patch on their jerseys.
Cooke was extended last offseason, and has become a trusty punter for Jacksonville sine being drafted by the team in 2018.
Matiscik has become a leader on the team, having played his full NFL career in Duval as well.
"I think he is really ascending as a leader on this team," Coen said. " I mean, look, three-time Pro Bowler, that speaks for itself, but I think his maturity, presence, accountability in there as well
On defense, Hines-Allen was an obvious nod, as he has served a s a vocal leader on that side of the ball for many seasons in Duval.
Last season, he recorded his fifth-straight season with seven or more sacks, while becoming the leading sack-man in franchise history.
Linebacker Foyesade Oluokun is another strong choice, as he has been one of the most-consistent players at his position since arriving in the NFL.
Since entering the league in 2018, Oluokun's 1,061 total tackles are the third-most in the NFL, while he has held down the middle of Anthony Campanile's defensive unit.
Defensive back Jourdan Lewis rounds out the captains on defense, having recorded at least one takeaway in each of his last five seasons.
In early-August, Pro Football Focus' Dalton Wasserman released his rankings of the top 32 cornerbacks in the NFL, with Lewis being the lone Jaguar to grace the list (No. 21).
"Lewis has been one of the NFL’s more productive slot cornerbacks over the past two seasons in particular. Since the start of 2024, his 78.7 PFF coverage grade ranks 12th among cornerbacks who have played at least 400 coverage snaps," Wasserman wrote. "During that time, he’s amassed three interceptions, nine pass breakups and 44 total stops. A return to full health and an even more defined role in the slot should allow Lewis to have another productive season."
Alongside Montaric "Buster" Brown and Travis Hunter, the Jaguars' secondary has no shortage of talent and speed.
