Free agency begins on Monday, and the Jacksonville Jaguars have acted preemptively over the last month to restructure and re-sign players that make sense, both from a personnel and a financial standpoint.
On offense, the Jaguars have shored up the positions of tight end, running back and offensive line.
The Jaguars offense ranked 11th in the NFL in total offense and sixth in points scored. The power of restructuring in roster building is undeniable.
Late Friday, the Jaguars reportedly restructured the contract of cornerback Jourdan Lewis, freeing up another $6 million in cap space, making the team salary-cap compliant heading into the new league year.
Morris was a priority to re-sign as he is highly regarded for his blocking ability and his play on special teams. The Jaguars signed Morris to a one-year contract extension worth around $3 million. Last season, Morris caught six passes and scored one touchdown coming off the bench. And, while the Jaguars staff interviewed tight ends Oscar Delp (Georgia) and Jack Endries (Texas) at the combine last month, Morris provides a veteran presence and leadership in the locker room.
The Jaguars' offensive line, although they went through several versions, performed well as a unit and limited the sacks and pressures of quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Mekari brings a steady presence to a unit that blocked for a rushing attack that scored 22 touchdowns last season.
Jacksonville restructured Mekari’s contract to convert $9.2 million of his salary into a signing bonus and added three void years. The result is that a veteran player returns and $7.6 million of cap space is cleared from the team's cap overage.
With Travis Etienne on the verge of free agency, Dallas joins fellow running backs under contract for 2026 -- Bhayshul Tuten, LeQuint Allen and futures/reserve signee Ja’Quinden Jackson.
Dallas played in six games last season -- after signing with Jacksonville on Dec. 16 -- and gained 21 yards and scored zero touchdowns. The 27-year-old former Hurricane's snaps came mostly on special teams.
Last month, Dallas signed a one-year contract extension worth $1.3 million. Recent mock drafts have the Jaguars taking running backs like Jonah Coleman (Washington) and Mike Washington Jr. (Arkansas), but the running back room looks solid in Jacksonville ... unless Etienne signs elsewhere.
