With Geno Smith starting and Cade Klubnik sidelined by injury, the New York Jets may turn to the supplemental draft to find an immediate spark for their evolving offense.

The New York Jets traded for Geno Smith this offseason to become their Week 1 starter.

Those plans didn't go out the window when they drafted former Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Klubnik's development has taken a hit during OTAs as he deals with back soreness. The former Tigers quarterback was not a full participant during early mandatory minicamp practices, and he faces a steep challenge to get up to speed during training camp this summer.

With questions at the quarterback position both for this season and in the future, New York is an obvious landing spot for Brendan Sorsby, who is set to have his pro day on July 10 in Dallas before entering the supplemental draft this summer.

The Jets would have to place a bid on Sorsby, who was a starter at Cincinnati before entering the transfer portal for Texas Tech this offseason. However, his college career came to an end after he admitted to having a sports gambling addiction and sought help at an in-patient facility in Arizona this spring.

Per Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom, the Jets are “emerging as the strongest" destination for Sorsby this summer. A league executive told La Canfora that Sorsby would be expected to play this season if New York lands him in the supplemental draft.

Of course, that would be dependent on the league's decision on whether to suspend Sorsby or not during the upcoming season.

The exec thinks Jets owner Woody Johnson would be intrigued by the publicity the team would receive if they took Sorsby.

“I could see the Jets doing it,” the exec said. “We know that Woody (Jets owner Woody Johnson) loves this stuff. He loves the attention.”

Publicity isn't the best reason to make a decision to spend what would likely be a Day 1 or Day 2 2027 draft pick on the quarterback. However, there is good reason to believe Sorsby is a talented player who could excel as an NFL quarterback.

New York isn't going to win a Super Bowl with Smith as the starter. Klubnik can't be relied upon to be ready to start this season.

Near the end of the season, Sorbsy could show promise by throwing to a talented receiver corps of Garrett Wilson, Omar Cooper Jr. and tight end Kenyon Sadiq.
