In fact, the last time New York qualified for postseason play was the 2010 season. It has been a tough drought for this franchise, but there seems to be some optimism around the organization.
With a young team now in place and head coach Aaron Glenn, the Jets could start to build toward being more competitive. It's not likely to happen overnight, or even this coming season, but the Jets have some solid pieces in place.
One of the big question marks around this team is at the quarterback position. New York has seen a revolving door of signal-callers over the years, and this season there isn't anything set in stone.
Veteran Geno Smith is likely to be the starter, but after him, it's rookie Cade Klubnik. New York could benefit from adding another quarterback to the group, giving this team some depth in case of injury.
NFL analyst Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report mentioned a former two-time Super Bowl champion who is still a free agent. This would be veteran Jimmy Garoppolo.
Garoppolo has not seen the field since 2024, when he was with the Los Angeles Rams. The veteran was on Los Angeles last season, appearing in three games, but he didn't throw a pass.
The career of Garoppolo has been highly discussed, with him seeing some real success in the league. He led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl, and he won two titles with the New England Patriots as the backup to Tom Brady.
But as a starter, he has been very up and down, leading to his career going a little sideways. However, he can still be a decent backup for a team like the Jets, even providing more mentorship to a young player like Klubnik.
Garoppolo would be brought on as a high-end backup to Smith, giving the Jets more veteran leadership in the locker room. He has considered retirement in the past year, but this offseason, Garoppolo has said he wants to keep his career going.
All in all, this wouldn't be the worst idea for the Jets to make. Garoppolo could be an insurance option in case Smith were to play poorly or suffer an injury.
And with the Jets not likely to make the playoffs again this season, there aren't many downsides to a signing like this.
