Mac Jones is better than Geno Smith, so maybe the New York Jets should do this.
The New York Jets were named a potential trade suitor for San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones by NFL analyst Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report.
Knox believes Jones' trade value is a conditional 2027 second-round pick.
Jones appeared in 11 games for the 49ers last season. He put up 2,151 passing yards and 13 passing touchdowns while going 5-3.
Jones was the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent the first three years of his career with the New England Patriots. The Alabama product made the Pro Bowl as a rookie but struggled in Years 2 and 3.
After one season with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024, Jones signed with the 49ers in the offseason of 2025. San Francisco gave Jones a two-year, $8.4 million contract.
In 63 NFL games with the Patriots, Jaguars and 49ers, Jones has 12,741 passing yards and 67 passing touchdowns. He's currently the No. 2 QB in San Francisco behind Brock Purdy.
The Jets, who are 1-3, acquired Geno Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders in the offseason. In his second stint with New York, Smith has 902 passing yards, five passing touchdowns and zero interceptions. He's completing 72.6% of his passes.
New York is averaging just 19.0 points per game. That's 24th of 32 in the NFL.
Jones is better than Smith, so maybe the Jets should call the 49ers and see what it will take to get a deal done.
If New York doesn't want to give up assets for a player, then benching Smith for rookie QB Cade Klubnik should be under consideration. The Jets will not make the playoffs this season with Smith under center, so they might as well play Klubnik and see what the youngster can do.
Klubnik went 21-of-34 through the air for 190 passing yards in the preseason. He had no touchdown passes and threw one interception.
Entering the 2025 college football season, Klubnik was projected to be one of the top picks in the 2026 draft, but after he and Clemson struggled, Klubnik's draft stock took a hit.
The Jets selected Klubnik with the 110th overall pick in the 2026 draft. Even though his draft fall was significant, Klubnik still has a lot of confidence in his game.
Klubnik finished the 2025 college football season with 2,943 passing yards and 16 passing touchdowns. He threw for 10,123 passing yards and 73 touchdowns in his Clemson career.
The Jets face the 3-1 Cleveland Browns in Week 5.
