Why New York Jets Are Perfect Fit for This Veteran QB In 2026 cover image

Could the New York Jets make a massive splash this offseason by acquiring this veteran quarterback?

With the 2026 NFL Combine in full swing, the discussions surrounding the New York Jets’ quarterback position continue to heat up heading into the free agency period.

Despite possessing the No. 2 and No. 16 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, general manager Darren Mougey will likely not be able to select a quarterback in round one. Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza is the lone quarterback prospect to be a consensus round-one prospect, which means the Las Vegas Raiders will presumably select the former Heisman Trophy winner.

This now forces Mougey to look at Alabama’s Ty Simpson as a potential selection at pick No. 16, but whether or not the Jets decide to take him, the struggling franchise will need a veteran quarterback to let Simpson develop for a season.

Luckily, there is one option that is starting to float around in rumors, as Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray could be on the move this offseason.

Why Murray Makes Sense For New York

Murray, the former No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, has had a roller coaster of a career throughout his time with the Cardinals.

When he is healthy, Murray has proven to be a terrific quarterback at the NFL level. During his first three seasons with Arizona, the highly-regarded playmaker threw for over 11,000 yards and 70 touchdowns through 46 games. However, the primary concern with Murray has been his ability to stay on the field as of late, since he has only played one full season over the past four years.

Looking at how Murray would fit into the Jets’ future plans, the longtime veteran could be the perfect answer to the organization’s quarterback dilemma in 2026. Depending on whether the Cardinals decide to release Murray this offseason, his price tag could easily work with the Jets’ cap space.

If released before Jun 1, the Cardinals would eat roughly $2 million in cap space, but a post-Jun 1 cut could free up around $5 million in cap space. Taking a flyer on Murray this offseason to see if he is a better fit under newly-hired offensive coordinator Frank Reich would be an intriguing decision, and could bring stability to the quarterback position for New York.
