De'Von Achane's four-year extension signals Miami's commitment to running the ball.

The Miami Dolphins agreed to a four-year extension with running back De’Von Achane worth up to $64 million in what will be general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan’s first major deal. The extension has $32 million guaranteed with a $16 million average annual value, which makes Achane now the third-highest-paid back in the league, and bonuses could up the total deal to $68 million. Importantly, it keeps Achane with the Dolphins through 2030.

Sullivan referred to Achane as a “pillar” of the franchise and the team refused to make him available for a trade ahead of the NFL draft. They also declined to explore running backs in the draft, noting it was a priority to sign Achane before making other moves.

Achane rushed for a career-high 1,350 yards last season, earning him his first Pro Bowl honors. He leads all qualified backs in yards per carry (5.6) since 2023 and is tied for the second-most rushes of 50-plus yards with Derrick Henry and Johnathan Taylor, placing him in pretty considerable company. He also shows prowess as a pass catcher, with 172 receptions and 13 receiving touchdowns through his first three seasons.

The Dolphins, under new head coach Jeff Hafley, will look to run the ball more effectively next season, and their offseason moves certainly are coherent with that, using their first-round pick on Alabama Crimson Tide OT Kadyn Proctor as a critical blocker for Achane and the ground game.
