New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo considered retirement after he had a significant injury.

One of the core pieces of the New York Giants' young offense considered retirement after his rookie season. Running back Cam Skattebo had season-ending ankle surgery after having a solid start to his rookie season.

"Coming out of college, going into the NFL - I gave myself one rule," Skattebo said. "It was if I ever got a major injury I was done playing. That happened 7 games into my career. It kinda sucked. But I think that really helped me find who I am as a player and as a person."

It's a scary thought that Skattebo considered retirement after his rookie campaign, but the fact that he has returned will help the Giants' offense continue to develop.

He showed potential in his rookie season, as he rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns on 101 carries, along with 24 receptions for 207 yards and two touchdowns.

He will be the starting running back for New York in the 2026 season, with Najee Harris and Tyrone Tracy Jr. playing a role behind him in the run game.

The Giants have a lot of promise heading into the season under their new head coach, John Harbaugh. Harbaugh has been one of the best coaches in football, posting a 180-113 record and a Super Bowl title in his 18 years with the Baltimore Ravens.

With Harbaugh leading the way, New York should have a breakout year and be more competitive than they were in 2025, when they finished 4-13.

The Giants' offense should continue to develop, especially with Skattebo healthy as he enters his second season. Quarterback Jaxson Dart is also entering his second campaign after showing flashes in his rookie year, completing 63.7 percent of his passes for 2,272 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

The 23-year-old also rushed for 487 yards and nine touchdowns on 86 carries. In addition to Skattebo and Dart being back on the field, New York will also get the return of star wide receiver Malik Nabers.

With those three pieces in place on offense and Harbaugh as the new head coach, the Giants could be a sleeper team to make a playoff push.
