This New York Giants defensive back just made an incredibly wild proclamation.
The New York Giants are expected to be a far better team than last season, but there is no question the ballclub still has significant holes up and down the roster.
Perhaps the most glaring weakness for the Giants is at cornerback.
Paulson Adebo, Greg Newsome II, Deonte Banks and Colton Hood comprise New York's top four players at the position, and they all have issues one way or another.
Adebo struggled mightily in his Giants debut last season and hasn't looked great this summer. Newsome has largely been a disappointment since entering the NFL as a first-round pick back in 2021. Banks has been a complete bust. Hood is just a rookie.
To make matters worse, New York lost its top cornerback from last year, Cor'Dale Flott, to free agency.
Big Blue fans have every reason to be concerned about the state of the secondary heading into the team's Week 1 matchup against a Dallas Cowboys squad featuring CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens at wide receiver, but apparently, Newsome thinks everything will be perfectly fine.
More than fine, actually.
While speaking to reporters this week, Newsome went as far to say that he feels the Giants have the best group of cornerbacks in football.
"I think we've got the best cornerback room in the league when you talk about depth and just guys having the ability to play," Newsome said. "I feel like all of us can be out there Week 1 and play at a very elite level."
Yeah, I don't think anyone is going to take those comments from Newsome all that seriously.
It's great that Newsome is confident in himself and his team, but he really didn't have to go all the way there with his bold proclamation.
If New York's cornerback room is even adequate this season, the Giants should be happy, because it's very hard to imagine this group even being close to elite.
Now, I will say that Banks has looked much better this offseason, and Newsome has played well enough to potentially win the CB1 job. Then there's Hood, who is incredibly talented and could ultimately emerge as the best cornerback on the team.
But the Giants might not even have a true No. 1 corner on the roster, which could end up dooming the team's playoff chances.
Definitely not a wise statement from Newsome.
