The New York Giants should get on the phone with the Pittsburgh Steelers now.

The New York Giants have a bunch of question marks heading into the 2026 NFL campaign, but perhaps none are as pressing as the cornerback position.

New York is entering the season with a quartet of Paulson Adebo, Greg Newsome II, Deonte Banks and Colton Hood at corner.

Adebo was the No. 1 corner last year, but some feel he might not even start in Week 1. Newsome has been up and down throughout his career. Banks has looked better this summer for sure, but as of now, he's a first-round bust. Hood is just a rookie.

As good as the Giants' front seven looks, there is no doubt that the secondary could ultimately derail the efforts of defense, and New York hasn't even really been trying to repair the problem.

But what about getting on the phone with the Pittsburgh Steelers to inquire about cornerback Joey Porter Jr.?

Porter is in the middle of a contract standoff with the Steelers, and former Pittsburgh cornerback Joe Haden recently said the Steelers have yet to even make an offer to the 26-year-old.

Pittsburgh is hoping to find a resolution with Porter before the season opener, but if the Steelers are unable to extend the former second-round pick, who is entering the final year of his contract, a trade is possible.

Enter the Giants, who would represent one of the best possible landing spots for Porter.

Of course, cost would be a factor here. Porter is good, but he's not elite. New York shouldn't be paying an extravagant price for him.

But there is no question that the Giants should at least inquire about Porter to see if he could be had for a reasonable return.

He isn't Patrick Surtain II, but Porter still posted a very solid 74.1 coverage grade at Pro Football Focus last season. Plus, at 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, he brings terrific size for the cornerback position.

There is no way New York can feel comfortable heading into 2026 with its cornerback room as currently constructed. The Giants have been concerned with shoring up the defensive tackle room, which is fine, but corner is also a prominent hole.

Perhaps Big Blue has already placed a call to Steel City about Porter. But if the Giants haven't done so yet, they better do so now before it's too late.
