As the NFL head coaching carousel continues to ramp up, many fans are patiently waiting to see who the New York Giants decide to hire as the team’s next head coach.
The Giants' poor start to the 2025 season resulted in head coach Brian Daboll being fired, as he finished with a 20-40-1 record with the organization. Now, general manager Joe Schoen must find his replacement, with one name beginning to gain traction for the job opening.
According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, Indianapolis Colts’ defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo is expected to be a strong candidate for the Giants' head coaching vacancy.
Prior to this season with the Colts, Anarumo spent six years with the Cincinnati Bengals as the team’s defense coordinator. And despite being fired, the 59-year-old coach was quickly hired by the Colts and has been a key piece to the franchise’s incredible run this season.
Indianapolis’ defense ranks No. 9 in average points allowed per game at 20.8, which has played a factor in the Colts' 8-3 season.
In addition to being a top coaching candidate, Anarumo has a history with the Giants, as he was the team’s defensive backs coach during the 2018 season under Pat Shurmur.
While the Giants continue to shop for a new head coach before the 2026 NFL season, Anarumo makes for an intriguing option for the struggling franchise.
New York’s defense, on paper, should be considered one of the best in the NFL due to the star power of Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns, and 2025 first-round pick Abdul Carter.
However, this has not been the case this season. The Giants' decision to fire defensive coordinator Shane Bowen on Monday clearly points to the front office’s dissatisfaction with the defense's performance this year. But hiring Anarumo could be the correct move to try an elevate the starting eleven.
Other names that have been floated around in head coach talks are Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.
Both coordinators have done a terrific job this season in their current roles, and the Giants are in a position to give both candidates a second chance at being a head coach.
