The New York Giants just dropped a big hint with their sudden $46 million decision.

The New York Giants made a surprising move on Tuesday, signing cornerback Greg Newsome II to a three-year, $46 million extension featuring $32 million in guarantees.

Newsome has been playing some impressive football thus far this season, so the Giants wanted to make sure they locked him up now before he hit the free-agent market come springtime.

But what does this mean for New York's cornerback room as a whole?

The Giants signed Newsome last March. They also selected Colton Hood in the second round of the NFL Draft. Additionally, they've clearly revitalized Deonte Banks' career.

Banks is slated to hit the open market after the season, and based on the way he has been playing, he's probably due for a big pay day. But New York would probably like to retain him.

The problem? The Giants also inked Paulson Adebo to a three-year, $54 million contract in March 2025, and it seems highly doubtful that New York will keep all of Newsome, Banks and Adebo on the roster next season.

If the Giants cut Adebo after the 2026 campaign, they would save $14 million. Considering he was pedestrian during his debut campaign in New York last season and was already on injured reserve at one point this year, he will certainly be on the chopping block.

The secondary was a massive concern for the Giants heading into the year, but the play of Newsome and Banks has mitigated some of those worries. Of course, Adebo having been sidelined for so long was a pain, and Hood's early struggles have been a bummer.

But all things considered, New York's passing defense — which ranks third in the NFL in yards allowed and 13th in passer rating — has been solid. Jevon Holland being an early Defensive Player of the Year candidate has certainly helped, but the cornerback situation has not been nearly as bad as many anticipated.

The fact that John Harbaugh felt comfortable paying Newsome long term is a clear indication that he too is very satisfied with the way things have unfolded in the Giants' defensive backfield, but it could still use some work.

Luckily, the 2027 draft class is slated to be teeming with talent at the cornerback position, so releasing Adebo (which seems inevitable this point), re-signing Banks and picking up another corner come draft time should be a priority for the Giants.
