The New York Giants have been linked to a trade they should absolutely avoid.
The New York Giants' playoff hopes came crashing down in Week 2, when Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury during the team's loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
The biggest problem? There are still 15 games remaining in the regular season, so the Giants will have to find a way to navigate life without Dart.
Jameis Winston is the starting quarterback for now, and outside of Jake Haener, New York doesn't really have any other options.
As a result, the Giants are widely expected to add another signal-caller, and while I don't necessarily advise giving up draft capital to do so, many feel they could explore a trade.
On that note, John Breech of CBS Sports listed off five potential names New York could pursue, and one name in particular stuck out: Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Justin Fields.
Could the Giants bring Fields back to MetLife Stadium, where he spent an absolutely dreadful 2025 campaign with the Jets?
Fields is currently serving as Patrick Mahomes' backup. The Chiefs acquired him during the offseason in the event that Mahomes — who was coming off of his own knee injury — wasn't ready for Week 1. We obviously now know that Mahomes was more than prepared.
So could Kansas City ultimately move Fields by the NFL trade deadline? And could New York make a play for him now?
As I've stated previously, I don't think the Giants should part with a single draft pick for a backup quarterback. They are already short on 2027 draft capital as it is. They traded their fourth-round pick in the Malachi Fields deal back in April, and they also don't have a seventh-rounder this year.
Could New York trade future draft capital? Sure, but why would the Giants give up a future draft choice for 15 games of a backup signal-caller? It just doesn't make any sense.
Fields himself is a former first-round pick, but he has been a colossal bust. It hasn't mattered where he has been.
There is a reason why the Chicago Bears were so quick to dump him for a minimal cost, and there is a reason why the Pittsburgh Steelers had no interest in re-signing him after 2024. The Jets also couldn't wait to get rid of him.
Fields simply isn't very good, and while he is athletic enough to keep things interesting and would be a fine addition if he were a free agent, this would require a trade. And that would be silly.
