New York Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy has hyped up newly acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

The New York Giants made some waves around the NFL this week, trading for former first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings.

With New York seeing starting quarterback Jaxson Dart go out with an injury for the remainder of the season, the Giants' front office decided to add some depth to the mix. McCarthy now goes behind starter Jameis Winston in the pecking order, but he could always get some playing time as the year goes on.

The former first-round pick has seen a very up and down start to his NFL career, with McCarthy underperforming as the Vikings starter last season. But to his credit, McCarthy did lead Minnesota to a winning season.

However, it wasn't good enough to get the Vikings into the playoffs, and the team decided to go in a different direction. With Minnesota, McCarthy went 6-4 as a starter, throwing for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, while completing 57.6 percent of his passes.

McCarthy also rushed for 181 yards and four touchdowns, showing an ability to be a dual-threat quarterback. But the Vikings wanted to see more from him, and the Giants now have a chance to see what he can do.

Now, with the Giants, McCarthy is out to prove that he should be a starter in this league. And so far, so good with New York for the former Michigan product.

Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy hyped up the young quarterback following practice earlier today. Nagy has worked with many players in the NFL, and he may be able to help McCarthy turn his career around.

While Winston is the starter for the Giants, if he were to struggle, the team could always turn to McCarthy. After all, McCarthy may have more of a ceiling than Winston since he's still fairly young.

But for now, Winston will be given the reps as the starter and the Giants will try to move forward with him to win as many games as possible. New York has started the new season out 2-1, and the team has a very "winnable" games coming up on the schedule.

If McCarthy is ever given a chance to play, the Giants could see how he fares and make a decision on his future from there. But if the words from Nagy mean anything, fans could be excited to see what the former Michigan quarterback has in store for them.
