New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury, but where was the primary damage?
We know that New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury against the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night. We also knew that Dart would have to undergo surgery.
But where exactly was the extent of the damage?
The good news is that Dart's ACL is intact. The bad news? The meniscus, MCL and PCL all sustained damage. So, what exactly will the surgery entail?
Dan Duggan of The Athletic has reported that Dart will be undergoing surgery in Manhattan on Friday and that it will involve a full repair of the meniscus. The MCL and PCL will be addressed during the procedure if necessary.
This is actually good news for Dart and the Giants. Well, the best news you can imagine given the circumstances.
Head coach John Harbaugh ruled Dart out for the regular season, but left open the possibility that the 23-year-old could return for the playoffs if New York makes it.
I think we all know that the Giants aren't reaching the postseason at this point, but the fact that Dart would potentially be available in such a case demonstrates that his knee injury isn't quite that severe.
The fact that Dart avoided a torn ACL — or significant damage to the MCL and PCL — is the biggest takeaway here. Not that a torn meniscus is no big deal, but it's certainly more manageable than some of the other scenarios.
At this rate, Dart should have no issue being ready for training camp next spring, and his status for Week 1 of the 2027 NFL campaign seems to be set in stone. Barring any unforeseen setbacks, he'll be playing.
Of course, there have been some questions as to whether or not the Giants will move forward with Dart next season considering this upcoming draft class is slated to be teeming with elite quarterback talent, but chances are, Dart will be under center for New York come next September.
Dart looked brilliant in Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys, going 23-for-29 with 230 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 54 yards in Big Blue's 28-20 win.
The former first-round pick also displayed tremendous potential during his rookie campaign, throwing for 2,272 yards, 15 touchdowns and five picks while completing 63.7 percent of his passes in 12 starts. He added 487 yards and nine scores on the ground.
Hopefully, Dart is able to make a full recovery and take a big step forward next fall.
