Giants' Vita Vea Trade Pursuit Comes With Glaring Warning Label

The New York Giants may want to pass on Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea.

The New York Giants are on the hunt for a defensive tackle, and while they struck out on Jeffery Simmons, they have set their sights on another monster in the middle: Vita Vea.

This isn't the first time we have heard the Giants connected to Vea. New York was rumored to be interested in the star defender during his contract dispute with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the offseason, but the two sides ultimately settled on an agreement.

But now, there are rumblings that Vea could be available once again, and with the Giants in dire need of some help alongside of DJ Reader, Vea could be an option.

The NFL trade deadline is in less than a week, so New York needs to act fast, and Vea could end up being the Giants' most viable target.

Unlike other defensive tackles such as Grover Stewart and A'Shawn Robinson, Vea is under contract beyond this year, so New York wouldn't run the risk of losing him to free agency. That gives Vea an edge over the field. So does his reputation.

But would Vea actually be a strong addition for Big Blue?

Vea signed a one-year, $30 million extension with the Buccaneers back in August, keeping him under wraps through 2027. He carries a $30.6 million cap hit for next season, which would obviously eat into the upcoming cap space the Giants are slated to have.

That would be one thing if he were still the Vita Vea of old, but now, he might just be an old Vita Vea.

Vea has been declining, and anyone who has watched him the last couple of years would confirm it. He is 31 years old and posted 34 tackles and 4.5 sacks last season, his worst numbers in quite some time. He also posted a 60.8 run defense grade at Pro Football Focus.

Things haven't been much better for the former first-round pick in 2026. Through eight games, Vea has logged 16 tackles and one sack, and his run defense grade is 48.9. That ranks 86th among 128 interior defenders.

As I always say: PFF is not the Bible, but it is generally a pretty good indication of how a player has performed, and in Vea's case, the eye test agrees.

Would the two-time Pro Bowler represent an upgrade over what the Giants currently have at DT next to Reader? Sure. That isn't up for debate. The question is whether or not New York should surrender draft capital and take on Vea's cap hit for next season.

I get that the Giants want to improve in the short term, but they have to be careful in how they go about doing it. I'm not so sure that acquiring an expensive, declining player is the best way for the G-Men to move forward.

In Vea's case, I feel New York would simply be chasing a player that doesn't actually exist anymore.
