Who would have thought Jameis Winston would be the answer for the New York Giants/
Entering the 2026 NFL campaign, there was considerable hype surrounding the New York Giants because of quarterback Jaxson Dart.
Dart displayed tremendous promise in Year 1, and he had what was probably the best game of his career during the Giants' season-opening win over the Dallas Cowboys last month.
Then, Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 2, and it appeared that New York's playoff hopes were already shot.
But in stepped Jameis Winston.
The Giants are undefeated since Winston took the reins under center, having gone 2-0-1 in his three starts thus far. And they were a Cam Skattebo fumble away from being 3-0.
Winston threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns during New York's tie against the Washington Commanders last Sunday, rallying the Giants back from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit.
And throughout this entire process, he made Big Blue believe, something we haven't seen from the Giants in well over a decade.
Perhaps Winston, who may very well be the best leader in the sport, is exactly what this languishing franchise needed. Yes, he has his faults. No, he is not a long-term answer under center. Yes, New York desperately needs Dart to get healthy for 2027.
But for a young team still trying to find its way, Winston is serving his purpose.
That was made very evident during overtime against the Commanders last week, when Darnell Mooney dropped a critical third-down pass and proceeded to sulk on the sideline.
Cameras then caught a seated Winston shouting encouragements at the dejected receiver, telling Mooney that he, Winston, was at fault for not making a good enough throw.
It has also been made very clear in every postgame interview, in every clip caught in the Giants' locker room and by how Winston carries himself on the field.
Winston has faith. He believes. And he has instilled that belief into the rest of his Giants teammates who, less than a year ago, couldn't get out of their own way.
Of course, John Harbaugh deserves credit, as well. New York almost certainly would have lost these last three games under Brian Daboll — or any coach the franchise has had since Tom Coughlin. His influence has been incredibly strong.
But for as much as people have wanted to clown Winston over the years, it's time that he is actually taken seriously.
Gone are the days of "eating a W" (although even then you could see the leadership qualities). Winston is now a grown man on a mission, and that's something the Giants have lacked for years.
Dart's injury stinks. Hopefully, the sophomore makes a full recovery and is back calling the shots next fall. But maybe Winston stepping into the role of starting quarterback was actually a blessing in disguise for an inexperienced Giants squad that was in desperate need of leadership.
