The New York Giants are getting close to acquiring another quarterback.
The New York Giants' quarterback room just became a whole lot thinner after the loss of Jaxson Dart, who is out for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury.
Jameis Winston is now the Giants' starter under center, but with Jake Haener serving as the only backup, New York needs some insurance.
And apparently, the Giants plan on getting it. Soon.
Tom Pelissero of The Ringer has reported that New York spent the last week "making calls" on quarterbacks and could acquire one as soon as Monday.
What Pelissero didn't say, however, is whether or not this would be a trade or a free-agent addition.
If it's the former, do not sign me up.
There is absolutely no reason for the Giants to waste draft capital — which they don't have much of in 2027 — for a backup quarterback who might not even play.
That's especially when New York could just sign someone like Jimmy Garoppolo or Jake Browning in free agency ... or potentially poach Joe Milton off the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad.
The Giants aren't going to the playoffs this year anyway. That dream ended the second Dart went down Monday night in Los Angeles. So why waste another future draft asset?
I've seen some people suggest J.J. McCarthy as an option, but that doesn't make much sense, either. McCarthy is a developmental quarterback; not a reliable backup. And if New York plans on keeping Dart long term, why bother developing another young signal-caller?
The Giants' plan should be finding the most capable backup possible without actually giving up anything in return.
New York traded its 2027 fourth-round pick in the Malachi Fields deal back in April. It also does not have a seventh-rounder this year.
I suppose the Giants can trade future draft choices, but even then, would it really be worth it? Those late-round picks do matter, and trading them for a rental backup would not exactly be a wise move.
The fact that New York's season has already gotten to this point is beyond depressing. The Giants were clearly in the process of building something this year, only to see it ripped away from them two weeks into the season.
But giving up draft capital just to slap a quick band-aid on the problem is not the answer.
Hopefully, John Harbaugh and Joe Schoen end up making the sound decision, which is just signing a quarterback.
