New York Giants Could Debut a New Weapon Against the Rams

The New York Giants put together a convincing 28-20 win over the Dallas Cowboys this past Sunday, but one player who was conspicuously absent during the victory was running back Najee Harris.

The Giants signed Harris last month, and the general consensus was that the former Pro Bowler would ultimately play a rather significant role for New York this fall.

Well, Harris was actually inactive for Week 1, with Cam Skattebo, Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy getting the call in the backfield.

That may change for Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams, however.

Tracy carried the ball just two times for 14 yards versus the Cowboys before being benched due to a lost fumble in the red zone. Those were the only two snaps Tracy played all evening, and considering how mistaken-laden his preseason was, it seems fair to say that the 26-year-old is in John Harbaugh's doghouse.

That could mean Harbaugh could call on Harris in Los Angeles next Monday, which will make the Giants' rushing attack look slightly different.

Harris put together four straight 1,000-yard campaigns with the Pittsburgh Steelers between 2021 and 2024, and while he only averaged 3.9 yards per carry throughout the process, his bruising style made him a terrific choice in short-yardage situations.

Is Harris a bit too similar to Skattebo in that regard? Perhaps, but Skattebo is a bit more versatile of a runner, especially now that Harris has a torn Achilles in his rearview mirror, an injury he sustained with the Los Angeles Chargers last season.

Skattebo will be the primary back, but New York may decide to feature Harris in those short-yardage and goal-line moments. Or simply to give Skattebo a breather.

It's also worth noting that Harris is a fine pass-catcher out of the backfield, so the Giants may deploy the veteran as a receiver, as well.

Surprisingly, Singletary has clearly established himself as New York's No. 2 back, and he ended up catching four passes for 22 yards and a touchdown against Dallas. Jaxson Dart seems very comfortable with the 29-year-old, so expect a heavy dosage of Singletary versus the Rams, as well.

Harris still hasn't played in a regular-season game since last September, so he needs to get his feet wet again. That may very well happen next Monday, and if he is active and performs well, it could potentially mean the end for Tracy in the Big Apple.
