New York Giants' Defense Could See 'Surprise Shakeup'

The New York Giants' secondary has been a major sticking point throughout the offseason, and that has continued into training camp.

The Giants lost Cor'Dale Flott — who was their top cornerback last year — to free agency and replaced him with Greg Newsome II, who is definitely a downgrade. New York also selected cornerback Colton Hood in the second round of the NFL Draft.

That gives the Giants a quartet of Paulson Adebo, Newsome, Hood and former first-round bust Deonte Banks to round out the cornerback room. Art Green is lurking on the outskirts.

Newsome was a former first-rounder himself and did show some promise in his early years with the Cleveland Browns, so perhaps there could be something there. Hood may very well be the best corner in the 2026 draft class. Banks has looked really good throughout the offseason program, so perhaps he could save his career.

But what about Adebo?

New York signed the 27-year-old to a three-year, $54 million contract in free agency in March 2025. That followed a really impressive four-year stretch with the New Orleans Saints.

Adebo was expected to be the Giants' No. 1 cornerback, but instead, he endured a very disappointing debut campaign in the Big Apple, missing five games due to injury and underperforming when he was on the field.

To make matters worse, Adebo skipped the start of New York's voluntary offseason workouts, which, as Dan Duggan of The Athletic has noted, surely didn't sit well with new head coach John Harbaugh.

Adebo also did not get off to a great start in training camp.

On that note, Duggan feels like the Giants could end up moving some pieces around in the secondary, and it could result in Adebo getting the shaft. At least as far as his presence in the starting lineup.

This would be a significant move for New York for multiple reasons.

First of all, Adebo carries a $24.2 million cap hit this season. There is an out in his deal after 2026, but that's still a lot of money to have sitting as a reserve this year.

Second, the Giants don't really have a ton of options behind Adebo. Newsome is in no way, shape or form a No. 1 corner. Hood is just a rookie. The idea of Banks taking on such a prominent role is laughable at this point.

So, could New York potentially swing a surprising trade for a cornerback during camp? Top corners don't exactly grow on trees, so good luck finding one.

The Giants could always sign someone like Trevon Diggs, but he would be more of a depth addition than an Adebo substitute at this stage of his injury-plagued career.

All things considered, the fact that Adebo is already evidently not on the best of terms with Harbaugh is not a great sign for New York's defensive backfield with Week 1 right around the corner.
