The New York Giants are facing a complicated situation with running back Tyrone Tracy.
The New York Giants had mostly positive takeaways during their Week 1 win over the Dallas Cowboys, but not every Giants player was so fortunate.
Perhaps the most obvious in the latter category was running back Tyrone Tracy, who carried the ball twice before losing a fumble and being benched.
That wouldn't have been so terrible had it not been for the blunders Tracy also made in the preseason, but clearly, head coach John Harbaugh is running thin on patience.
Harbaugh did console Tracy on the bench, and he did provide some positive words this week, stating that the 26-year-old is still a "big part" of New York's plans.
But just how much can the Giants trust Tracy at this point?
During his rookie campaign in 2024, the former fifth-round pick fumbled five times. He cleaned things up last season, putting the ball on the ground just once, but this year, he lost a fumble in preseason and then again in the season opener.
At this point, you have to wonder about his confidence.
When he is right, Tracy is the most dynamic ball-carrier the Giants have. He is their biggest breakaway threat, and he also possesses impressive versatility as a pass-catcher.
Remember: it was Tracy who opened last season as New York's No. 1 halfback until giving way to Cam Skattebo very early.
Skattebo is the featured back now, and Devin Singletary has surprisingly worked his way into the No. 2 role. Then there is Najee Harris, who is lurking after having signed with New York last month.
Harris was inactive for Week 1, but that could change heading into the Giants' Week 2 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams.
Harbaugh's comments, however, indicate that New York is willing to give Tracy another chance. And it's fair to note that Tiki Barber had a ball security issue that he ultimately repaired during his playing days ... although Tracy, as talented as he may be, is not on the same level as Barber.
Whether or not the Giants can comfortably put the ball in Tracy's hands right now is a pressing question, and it's an unfortunate one given how much the Purdue product can bring to New York's offense.
It's a complicated situation, and it's one that Harbaugh will have to handle delicately.
