The New York Giants have been connected to an absurd trade for a two-time Pro Bowler.
The New York Giants are aggressively looking to upgrade their roster before the NFL trade deadline, and they are leaving few stones unturned.
We already know about their hot pursuit of Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor. They also made a run at defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons before the Tennessee Titans traded him to the Chicago Bears.
But now, the Giants are chasing yet another star: Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea.
The Buccaneers could move Vea before Tuesday's cutoff, and New York is said to be interested in the two-time Pro Bowler.
However, Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports revealed a crazy detail in the Giants' hunt, stating that New York might be willing to surrender a first-round pick for Vea.
Um, what?
Vea is under contract through 2027, so it's not like the Giants would be parting with a first-rounder for a rental. But why on earth would New York give up a Day 1 pick for a declining 31-year-old who carries a $30.6 million cap hit next season?
There was a time when Vea was one of the best interior defenders in football. The 6-foot-4, 347-pound behemoth was both a terrific pass rusher and a nasty run-stopper. But he no longer excels in either area.
Yes, Vea takes up space because of his massive frame, but he logged just 34 tackles and 4.5 sacks last season, his worst numbers in years. Through eight games in 2026, he has totaled 16 tackles and one sack.
Plus, while Pro Football Focus is not a be-all-end-all in judging NFL players, it should be noted that his PFF stats have plummeted over the last few seasons, and the eye test absolutely matches that statistical downturn.
Vea has unquestionably lost a step or two, and if you're John Harbaugh and Joe Schoen, even parting with a Day 3 pick might be pushing it for Vea considering how much money he is due next season.
The Giants are finally on their way to entering a nice salary cap situation. They absolutely cannot ruin that for an aging, declining player. And when you factor in the possibility of New York trading a first-round pick on top of that, it gets really insane.
After all, the Giants just moved Dexter Lawrence for a first-round pick back in the spring because they didn't want to pay him, and Lawrence got tired of sitting around waiting for new contract.
Why would you then turn around and sacrifice a first-rounder for an inferior, older player in Vea who is making $30 million next season?
New York should avoid this ridiculous trade at all costs.
